ADP Traffic and Patrols: Impounding and Fine for Reckless Overtaking
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, June 15th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

As of tomorrow, Sunday, the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate will begin implementing penalties to motorcycles wrong overtaking in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.  The penalties include a week-long impounding of the motorbike; a fine of Dh200, and adding 3 black points to the driving license. This measure comes in line with the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ priority to make roads safer, and in keeping with the Directorate’s road safety strategy and procedures to reduce traffic accidents causes.

Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harthi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police indicated that penalizing motorcycle overtaking aims to curb violations made by some motorcyclists, such as dangerous overtaking vehicles at stop lights and intersections, overtaking between vehicles during traffic accidents or any other reasons, posing a serious hazard to motorcyclists and all road users.

Furthermore, Brigadier Al Harthi noted that there have been a total of 32 traffic accidents involving motorcycles were registered in the first half of this year, resulting in three serious injuries and 26 medium injuries. The number of fines issued to motorcyclists amounted to 936 tickets during the same period.

"The Traffic Control patrols and civil traffic investigation in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region, as well as cameras on intersections have proceeded to implement  Article (116) of the Traffic Law, "Dangerous Overtaking of Motorcycles”, which includes all forms of overtaking, namely;  overtaking vehicles at stop lights and intersections; overtaking between vehicles during traffic accidents or for any other reason; in addition to violating traffic rules and causing traffic jams”, noted Al Harthi.

On the same note, Al Harthi called on all motorcyclists to avoid overtaking to maintain their own safety, and avoid being penalized.  He pointed out that the only exception to the new rule includes the ADP Traffic and patrols Directorate carrying out traffic safety duties, as well as the Sa’aed motorcyclists who conduct minor traffic accidents mapping.

Within the framework of the traffic awareness campaign titled "A summer without Accidents”, Al Harthi urged all motorcycle drivers to observe safety procedures to prevent injuries, as motorcycle incidents cause 35 times more injuries than other vehicle accidents. He also stressed the importance of wearing a helmet to prevent head injuries, and wearing protective fireproof clothing.

He appealed to families to supervise their children during the summer holidays, to protect them from the dangers of using motorcycles on internal and external roads, in sandy areas, where they are more likely at risk of serious traffic accidents and their resulting deaths, injuries and disabilities.

Concluding, he underscored the importance of riding motorcycles in areas where bikes are permitted, including sandy and unpopulated areas, and refrain from riding them  in residential areas . He also called for intensifying supervision and traffic control on internal and external roads, to catch violators.
