● Pioneering UAE rider survey
● Main dangers posed by other motorists
● Need for customers awareness initiatives to appreciate riders’ safety
Dubai, United Arab Emirates -Tuesday, December 12th 2017 [ AETOS Wire ]
A pioneering study was conducted to validate the road safety perceptions of UAE motorcycle delivery riders, which results were presented at the ‘first-ever’ UAE Motorcycle Delivery Fleet Event in November 2017, an event jointly organized by RoadSafetyUAE and Al-Futtaim Honda.
5 dimensions were surveyed:
Behaviour of other motorists; Own behaviour; Perception of Customers; Bike safety; Training.
Thomas Edelmann, Managing Director of RoadSafetyUAE: “Motorcycle riders are amongst the most vulnerable road users and hence it is important to understand their perceptions and fears in order to work on improvement potentials. There is just no steel around them to protect them and we see a growing number of motorcycle delivery riders on UAE’s roads. We want to raise awareness for this topic via this pioneering delivery rider perception survey. Recently, we also held the ‘first-ever’ delivery rider fleet event, which was attended by major delivery fleet operators and other stakeholders who listened to presentation of Dubai Police, RTA, Deliveroo, UPS, Dubai Driving Center, MiX Telematics, Osram and RoadSafetyUAE. We will prepare additional initiatives, taking on board the findings of this survey.”
The most important and interesting findings of the survey are:
A) Motorcycle delivery riders’ perception regarding the behaviour of other motorists towards them:
78% Cars and other vehicles often don't INDICATE so it is difficult for me to anticipate their moves
77% Cars and other vehicles often CUT in front or behind me
68% Cars and other vehicles are often INCONSIDERATE to me
68% Cars and other vehicles often don't seem to SEE US properly
56% Sometimes OTHER MOTORCYCLE delivery riders ride recklessly and endanger me
B) Motorcycle delivery riders’ perception regarding their own behaviour:
94% I know exactly what MY COMPANY EXPECTS FROM ME for my safe driving
92% I think I am a SAFE DRIVER
19% I have been in an ACCIDENT within the last 12 months
C) Motorcycle delivery riders’ perception regarding the behaviour / attitude of customers:
Only 57%: I think customers UNDERSTAND if we are running a bit LATE
Only 51%: I think customers are CONCERNED about our safety
D) Motorcycle delivery riders’ perception regarding their equipment:
87% I am happy with the QUALITY of my bike
71% I am happy with the MAINTENANCE of my bike
69% I am happy with the PROTECTIVE GEAR
E) Motorcycle delivery riders’ perception regarding their training:
91% I am happy with the amount of initial training I received when I JOINED my company
86% I am happy with the amount of ONGOING training I received

Fardeen Sara, General Manager at Al-Futtaim Honda said, “As one of the leading providers of motorbikes to UAE’s delivery fleets, our responsibility does not end by providing the best and safest bikes. We also have an obligation to raise awareness amongst other road users to the dangers these riders face each and every day. The recent Bike Safety event was the first step in this direction, and we believe it will serve as a platform for industry players to come together and learn from each other to create a safer driving experience. We want to show corporate responsibility in cooperating with RoadSafetyUAE on the topic of motorcycles. We have strong ties to UAE’s big fleet operators and the governmental segment and we strongly believe in establishing a platform to network and learn from each other. All these efforts aim at increasing rider safety.”
Edelmann concludes: “Some of the results provide a clear ‘call to action’! Educational efforts must be directed at motorists in cars and heavy vehicles to show a respectful and caring attitude towards delivery riders. Another pressing issue is to educate customers by raising their awareness and to create a caring attitude for rider safety. Safety must be the number one concern, also for customers awaiting their food or other deliverables. We found the riders perceptions quite shocking as they state: ‘Only 51%: I think customers are CONCERNED about our safety’. Last buy not least, the riders’ awareness for safe conduct among themselves must be raised, as 56% state ‘Sometimes OTHER MOTORCYCLE delivery riders ride recklessly and endanger me’. These and other findings of our survey are truly insightful and we invite all UAE delivery fleets to take part in the survey, for their own benefit.”
4 prominent UAE motorcycle fleets participated in the survey and a total of 222 riders populated the questionnaires to date. All UAE fleet operators are invited to download the questionnaires and get their riders to participate. This will help to benchmark their results against the average and to address improvement potentials. The questionnaires can be downloaded for free:
