Under the slogan "Together to Achieve Reform"
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, December 15th 2015 [ME NewsWire]
Under the auspices of Lt. General His Highness Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, the annual GCC Unified Inmates’ Week activities will commence in the UAE on Sunday, under the slogan “Together to Achieve Reform”. The celebration will be taking place at the Ajman Culture Center and will continue until December 24.
Brigadier Hamad Khamis Al Dhaheri, Deputy Head of the Punitive and Correctional Establishments Department at the Ministry of Interior, noted that the Directorate General of Correctional and Punitive Establishments and its regional departments across the UAE have completed their preparations to mark the GCC Inmates Week, which has been approved by Their Highnesses and Excellencies the GCC Interior Ministers.
Brigadier Al Dhaheri said that the Unified GCC Inmates Week aims to spread the culture of training and rehabilitation of inmates for the service of the community. It also aims to emphasize the important role of strategic partners in the reform process, by taking advantage of inmates’ free time to boost their skills, qualify them for work as active and productive citizens; and to integrate inmates into society trough post-release care and changing social perception towards them.
Brigadier Al Dhaheri explained that the week’s events will include numerous activities that are organized by the Ministry of Interior; notably the Inmates Heritage Village that will be held on the Ajman Corniche. “The regional Punitive and Correctional Establishments Departments at the countrywide level will be taking part in the Heritage Village, which will showcase products manufactured by inmates and provide a brief overview on the services provided by the Establishments to inmates. The week’s events will also feature various competitions for the public,” he noted.
As a part of the GCC Inmates Week events, a Family forum will be organized for inmates, during which inmates may receive their families from inside the UAE and abroad. This forum aims to achieve interaction between inmates and their families and to facilitate the visit of insolvent inmates’ families. A workshop titled "Together to Achieve Reform” will also be held in the Emirates hall at the Ajman Police General Headquarters.
According to Brigadier Al Dhaheri, officers’ delegations from the Member states of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf will be participating in the events to mark the Unified GCC Inmates Week. It is worth mentioning that a number of officers from the Punitive and Correctional Establishments departments in the UAE will also be dispatched to GCC Countries, in order to exchange expertise, knowledge and successful experiences with their GCC peers.
Adding further, he said: “Under the directives of the Higher Leadership, the United Arab Emirates is keen to provide inmates with care, moral and financial support, and to provide them with religious and health education, to prevent them from relapsing into crime and from choosing bad companionship due to ignorance and poor faith. The UAE is keen also to provide inmates with post-release care, to rehabilitate them, integrate them into society and their families and provide them with decent work opportunities.”
In conclusion, Brigadier Al Dhaheri pointed out that the UAE has dedicated the utmost importance to the welfare of inmates and their families, and gave its directives to governmental and private sectors to provide all the resources needed by the inmates. “This includes offering support and assistance to inmates’ families to provide them with a decent life and stability in the absence of their breadwinners. Such measure would reflect positively on inmates’ mental endurance and stability and will reassure them that their family is in safe hands. All of these factors would guarantee that inmates return as righteous members of community after their release,” he concluded.
