Sunwave Communications, a specialist in Digital DAS technology has recently concluded negotiations with Canada’s Star Solutions to co-develop a Thin-RAN appliance, to complement its CrossFire platform.
MUNICH - Tuesday, December 15th 2015 [ME NewsWire]
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The buzz in the DAS and Small Cell community in recent months has been about Cloud-RAN (C-RAN), but there is an equally strong case for a compact software defined Thin-RAN approach to DAS deployment strategies, where LTE radios of any 3GPP band, FDD or TDD, are dynamically assigned to meet end-user capacity needs.
With sustained resistance to evolve from Remote Radio Head topologies to a multi-operator, multi-technology DAS Remote Unit topology, the adoption of CPRI connections between Baseband Units and Digital DAS head-ends is a long term objective for most cellular operators.
The partnership between Sunwave and Star Solutions will realise a capacity-centric DAS with plug-and-play Thin-RAN modules directly connected to the CrossFire Digital DAS head-end. With the Dynamic Capacity Management features available on CrossFire across its NP, LP and HP platforms, customised Thin-RAN modules can be assigned to discrete segments of DAS coverage down to potentially a single antenna unit.
According to Ben Patullo, CTO of Sunwave, “the partnership with Star Solutions will revolutionise the flexibility of capacity in CrossFire DAS solutions, with a direct benefit to carrier-grade Enterprise networks.” He declared that “Sunwave wants to be the first vendor to offer an agnostic approach to Small Cell deployments.”
“This development adds flexibility to our carrier and enterprise offerings. For enterprise, we’re enabling private LTE networks to be easily deployed with DAS coverage alongside our EPC product allowing them to fully exploit the benefits of LTE coverage and capacity for applications in equipment automation and telemetry,” says Myles Lu, VP of Marketing and Business Development at Star Solutions.
The Thin-RAN appliance offers a compact 3U sub-rack containing up to four software defined Baseband RF signals in either FDD or TDD schemes. Direct connection to carrier’s existing core network, irrelevant of the core vendor, will deliver an agnostic, flexible approach to RAN deployments in DAS.
