In the last 10 months of 2015, a total number of 6,287 motorists in Abu Dhabi have been fined for overtaking on the hard shoulder of the road, according to Colonel Hamad Mubarak bin Athath Al Ameri, Head of the Capital's Traffic Department at the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate General Colonel Al Ameri noted that the penalties associated with overtaking on the hard shoulder of the road are stipulated as per Articles (8) and (16) of the Traffic Law, in regards to motorists who endanger the lives of others. As such, Article (8) stipulates that motorists who pose a risk to others when overtaking will be penalized with a fine of AED 1,000, 12 black points, and vehicle impoundment for one month. Article (16) stipulates a fine of AED 600 and six black points for hard shoulder violations.
“First-time offenders will be asked to pledge never to repeat the violation again, and will be allowed to pay a fine in place of vehicle impoundment. Repeat offenders, however, will be referred over to the prosecution,” said Colonel Al Ameri as he referenced Article (57) of the Traffic Law. Additionally according to the provisions of the aforementioned article, repeat offenses within a time period of one year will be considered as an aggravated offense.
“Overtaking on the hard shoulder of the road is an extremely dangerous driving behavior that endangers other road users and threatens others’ lives,” Al Ameri reiterated. Moreover, he indicated that such violations are detected by the radars deployed on the roads; in addition to the intensive control by traffic patrols and traffic investigation officers on internal and external roads who arrest violators. “Put safety first, and abide by the Traffic Law,” he concluded.
