ADP Traffic and Patrols Directorate Warns of Dangers of Children Playing in Streets
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, October 12th 2015 [ME NewsWire] The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police warned parents and families of the danger of letting their children ride their self-balancing two-wheel electric scooters in the street, which are becoming very popular with young people. According to Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, Abu Dhabi Police: “Parents have been buying those scooters as toys for their children, despite the risk of riding them between vehicles and performing dangerous stunts, which may cause run-over accidents.” Colonel Al Ameri emphasized the importance of providing good quality play opportunities to children, provided that the toys do not pose a threat to them. “It is mandatory to follow safety instructions and choose safe play areas for children such as parks, allocated squares and sports centers available across the country,” said Colonel Al Ameri, stressing the importance of wearing the appropriate protective gear during practice and sports games. Adding further, the Chief of Public Relations Section underlined the keenness of the directorate to provide traffic safety for children, protect them against traffic accidents and enhance their awareness through lectures on traffic safety etiquette. “The directorate also strives to provide children with traffic-related information about the appropriate ways to board and exit buses and vehicles, to cross the road, and the proper way to sit in the car or school bus,” he continued. Colonel Al Ameri also indicated that such programs aim to provide children with the common self-care skills in order to avoid accidents while crossing roads, by teaching them about traffic signals and traffic signs related to drivers and pedestrians. Colonel Al Ameri warned parents against letting their children ride the two-wheel electric scooters that are fast, which makes them hard to control and dangerous to play with in the streets and between vehicles. Colonel Al Ameri reiterated the importance of riding scooters in parks and gardens only, stressing the role of parents to provide traffic safety for their children and protect them against traffic-related accidents they may face while playing in the streets. “Parents and families need to cooperate with the Abu Dhabi Police to support the efforts exerted to promote children’s safety,” he emphasized. Furthermore, Colonel Al Ameri explained that the International Organization for Road Accident Prevention has highlighted the various traffic accidents among children on roads during the 3rd International Child Road Safety Week held in Tunis. In conclusion, Colonel Al Ameri urged parents to prevent their children from riding their scooters except in allocated places and parks and to take the necessary safety and security precautions, namely wearing appropriate and comfortable clothes, and protective gear, such as a helmet, wrist pads, knee pads, and elbow pads. Moreover, he called on parents to teach their children the basic skills of riding scooters, to prevent them from performing dangerous stunts, and against riding them in inappropriate places.
