During the 11th Knowledge Forum, the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters (GHQ) emphasized the need to utilize the experiences of the EU’s law enforcement agency, Europol, in the application and development of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Police. Major General Dr. Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, stressed that the GCC Police aim to support and strengthen security coordination operations and information exchange among police authorities in member states. He said that the objective was to enhance security and fight crime under one unified vision.

“The role of the GCC Police is to provide the required security-related information based on the results of the analysis of the shared data,” said Maj. Gen. Dr. Al Nuaimi.  “This will enable police authorities in member states to take the necessary action and work towards establishing valuable partnerships with external institutions, which includes other police agencies, in order to support and strengthen security efforts.”

Also during the forum, Al Nuaimi pointed to the importance of standardizing data and to the methods of analysis and shared information systems. He stressed on the need to develop a database upon which work teams could all benefit from; and to create an efficient system to protect the shared data and information exchanged amongst member states.

In his presentation, Brian Donald, Europol’s Chief of Staff, provided the experience of Europol as it strives to provide operational support of various kinds to European countries. He said that Europol seeks to provide forensic and information analyses for security incidents and to provide the necessary solutions to increase the effectiveness, efficiency, and performance of local European police leaders.  The presentation also included information regarding how Europol utilizes shared databases to ensure a holistic approach for analysis and information exchange.

Donald stated that Europol relies on the streamlined, flexible, and effective framework for regional and international coordination and communication. He said that the framework is used for the collection and exchange of security information in European countries, and is also useful for investigations in that it is able to prioritize security issues and gather the relevant information about them.
