Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, June 18th 2015 [ME NewsWire]
On Wednesday, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with Universal Hospital, organized a lecture regarding the methods of dealing with diabetes during the holy month of Ramadan. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Abdul Razaq Thahabi, Internal Medicine Specialist.
The lecture was held at the Emirates Institute for Naturalization, Residency, and Ports, the lecture was attended by Colonel Yousef Ismail Al Khouri, Deputy Director General of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Abu Dhabi, in addition to department heads, section managers, and employees of the General Directorate.
The lecturer called upon those with type 2 diabetes who receive oral medications, to consult their physicians in order to determine the appropriate dosages of the medicine following Iftar. For patients with type 1 diabetes who receive insulin injections, he advised to avoid fasting and the subsequent decrease in blood sugar due to the significant health risks. Should the patient insist on fasting, the patient’s relatives should consistently be aware of his health condition; and in the event of a decrease in blood sugar, he or she must immediately break their fast by drinking juice or eating something with sugar and be taken to the hospital in order to follow-up and monitor his or her health condition. “The symptoms of diabetes include low blood sugar, sweating, shaking, and feeling as though one is starving,” he said.
For those who are fasting, Dr. Thahabi urged them to maintain their health by eating balanced meals. He advised them to consume a small amount of sweets two hours after Iftar in order to maintain blood sugar levels and facilitate digestion. He additionally stressed the importance of staying hydrated by drinking a lot of water, and not to skip Suhoor in order to avoid headaches when performing everyday activities.
Furthermore, he cautioned all who are fasting against eating fast food, as it is full of saturated fats that are hard to digest. He encouraged them to avoid exercising and practicing sports while fasting until after Iftar. Following his recommendations, Dr. Thahabi responded to the questions and inquiries of the attendants.
On the sidelines of the lecture, a medical team from the hospital provided medical check-ups for the workers at the General Directorate, which included measuring weight, height, and levels of blood pressure and blood sugar.
