ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, May 27th 2015 [ME NewsWire]
An estimated 12,000 individuals have benefited from 131 awareness programs organized by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police in the past four months of 2015. The objectives of the programs focus on promoting traffic safety culture amongst transport companies, people's councils, and the education sectors in schools and universities in both public and private institutions. The aim is to promote traffic safety and to limit all causes of accidents, fatalities, and serious injuries resulting from such incidents. Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of Public Relations Section in the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, noted that the outreach plan for this year includes 12 traffic awareness programs. “These programs aim to promote traffic culture amongst different segments of society in addition to instilling traffic education among students early on,” he said.
Furthermore, Col. Al Ameri revealed that the directorate will be launching comprehensive awareness initiatives in the coming period in coordination with its strategic partners. These initiatives aim to reduce all causes that lead to traffic accidents, during the holy month of Ramadan. They include intensifying traffic control on internal and external roads, and crowded places; as well as intensifying traffic control in markets and commercial centers.
Adding further, Col. Al Ameri called on motorists to strengthen efforts exerted to provide traffic safety during Ramadan by complying with traffic laws, reducing speeds, paying attention to the road, buckling seat belts, avoiding the use of hand-held phones while driving, leaving enough distance between vehicles, and paying attention to any surprises that may happen on the road.
Moreover, he urged motorists to check the validity of their vehicles’ tires by inspecting them and replacing them if worn-out, or have any cracks. Col. Al Ameri also encouraged drivers to purchase tires of high quality, and those that fit specifications. By doing so, drivers can avoid traffic accidents due to tire bursts. Drivers should also follow the correct instructions to ensure the safety of their vehicles’ tires by checking the validity of the tire frame, the measured temperature tolerance, the manufacturing date, and the appropriate cargo-load of the tires.
Upon commencement of the summer vacation for students, the Chief of the Public Relations Section urged families to pay attention to their children, to fill their free time, and not let them play on the road. “Road safety is not only the responsibility of the police - parents play an important role in monitoring their children, and should urge them to abide by traffic laws and avoid making any of the mistakes that lead to traffic accidents,” he said.
