Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, officially inaugurated the smart library at the Ministry of interior, which is considered the first of its kind in terms of harnessing modern technology in the area of sciences and spread of knowledge.
The smart library (www.smartlibrary.ae) contains a wide variety of digital information sources, including approximately 14,000 e-books; 8,000 periodic scientific journals; more than 3,000 online newspapers that are updated every minute; and thousands of Master’s and Phd thesis and dissertations from across the world; in addition to digital solutions and smart audiovisual programs that support the expansion of knowledge or academic attainment for all MoI staff members.
Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed called for providing the necessary electronic facilities to allow the ministry’s staff members to get access to the practical content of the smart library at all times, in a way that serves the UAE government’s vision towards transforming government services into smart services.
His Highness said: “Keeping pace with sciences requires providing staff members with digital and smart media content and means. This comes in line with the Ministry of Interior’s strategy, which calls for harnessing the latest technologies in order to support innovation, through the Creativity and Innovation Club affiliated with the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, which holds regular meetings with innovation teams through the interactive conference techniques available at the library.”
The inauguration ceremony, which was held at the Police Departments Complex in Abu Dhabi, was attended by Lieutenant General Saif Al Sha’far, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Interior; Major General Dr. Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior; Major General Khalil Dawood Badran, Director General of Finance and Services at Abu Dhabi Police; Major General Mohammed bin Al Awadhi Al Menhali, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Resources and Support Services; Major General Omair Al Muhairi, Director of Police Operations at Abu Dhabi Police; Major General Salem Al Shamesi, Director General of Finance and Services at the Ministry of Interior; Brigadier Sheikh Mohammad bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Director General of Security and Ports Affairs at Abu Dhabi Police; along with a number of general directors and senior officers from the Ministry of Interior and Abu Dhabi police.
For his part, Major General Dr. Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, stressed the MoI’s keenness to enhancing strategic partnerships with global prestigious universities and higher education institutions such as Harvard, Yale, and Oxford; so as to improve police work.
Moreover, the Secretary General indicated that the smart library uses the latest and most advanced devices and equipment; with a rate of paper usage at 0%. He also listed the available services and said: “The library is a specialized information center providing reports and analysis for the benefit of decision-makers, in addition to specialized and high-efficiency techniques for summarization and translation. The library also uses the ‘pics for learning’ technique, by which images are used to reinforce learning (Data Visualization) in order to encourage reading”.
For his part, Colonel Mohammed Hamid bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri, Strategy and Performance Development Director General at the Ministry of Interior, said: “The e-content of the library includes a wide range of international studies and recommendations issued by local and international academic institutions. This would pave the way to more improvement opportunities pertaining to participation in the Abu Dhabi Award for Excellence in Government Performance; in addition to using diverse benchmarking standards and choosing the best practices to be used in developing police services at the Ministry of Interior”.
Colonel Al Dhaheri noted that the smart library will contribute to support development initiatives and projects thanks to the valuable and extensive information it will provide. This personifies the Ministry of Interior’s keenness to participate effectively and actively in supporting all electronic and smart projects, aimed at promoting the UAE’s e-presence on the Global Competitiveness Index, and reinforce customers’ experience by upgrading the quality of provided services in the fields of education, digital culture and different electronic means and knowledge to achieve the government’s goal of making customers happy.
Fatima Ahmed Darwish, Director of the Smart Library at the MoI’s Strategy and Performance Development Directorate General, revealed: “The library will contribute to reinforcing partnerships via a unified platform for the exchange of information and the advancement of knowledge”. She also noted that the library will provide people with special needs with the opportunity to avail of the different services electronically or to consult the required content on-site at the library’s hall. In conclusion, Mrs. Darwish added that the library’s architectural design and educational environment provide an interactive environment, which keeps pace with the latest developments in information technology and smart services.
