Abu Dhabi Police Educate Students on Risks of Modern Technology

Under the “Learn essential lessons before you suffer their consequences” Campaign

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, May 13th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

Experts from Abu Dhabi Police called upon young men and women in the UAE to be careful and practice caution when using social media, modern applications and electronic communications to avoid falling prey to immoral and decadent people always lurking on the internet in search of vulnerability to sexually exploit them or blackmail young students.

This topic was discussed on the second day of the awareness-raising lectures for school students, which were held at the Abu Dhabi Police Officers’ Club, as a part of the “Learn essential lessons before you suffer their consequences” campaign. The campaign was launched by the Social Support Centers Department at Abu Dhabi Police, in collaboration with the ICT Department.

The experts emphasized that overexposure to strangers in social networking sites is a dangerous practice. They called upon students to protect their information and not to post any private photos, as well as to regularly change their passwords of their social media accounts.

Social Care Specialist Fatima Rashid Al Sam, from the Social Support Centers Department, highlighted the modern technology advantages and disadvantages. “Technology is necessary to create a modern learning process and getting acquainted with the latest advances in the fields of science and knowledge. However, when youngsters spend a fair amount of time on the Internet, it is inevitable they will come into contact with strangers, wishing to exploit others and harm them.” She urged the students to seek advice and help from their families and even from specialists if necessary.

For her part, Social Care Specialist Aalia Al Junaibi from the Social Support Centers Department tackled the negative impacts of social networking sites, which may include threats and blackmailing. She also explained the proper methods by which the social support centers deal with such cases.

Adding further, she listed the main causes that lead girls in particular to fall prey to decadent people and blackmailers, as well as the different ways used to lure unsuspecting victims, which she managed to compile during her years of experience in working on such cases.

IT Specialist Amina Al Azizi from the ICT Department at Abu Dhabi Police reviewed the most efficient ways and methods to protect personal information and data on the internet. She said: “Online protection is simple and easy, and only requires vigilance and regular updating.” She also highlighted the importance of using malware programs and seeking advice and guidance from grown-ups and experts in this field.

The second day of the campaign was intended for female school students of the intermediate and secondary levels. The events took place at the Police Officers’ Club in Abu Dhabi. Brochures and awareness publications were distributed to students.
