The Security Media Department at the Security Support Directorate General, the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, highlighted the need for concerted efforts amongst the various sectors of society to enhance the status of the Arabic language in UAE society, as it has an important role in consolidating the national identity of the UAE citizens; in pursuance of the objectives of the wise government. It also highlighted its keenness to develop the Arabic language through the high quality content of the media discourse.
Major Fawaz Ali Abdullah, Director of the Security Media Department, said: “Since its inception, the Security Media Department has realized the importance of the Arabic language and the need to restore its pristine glory, as well as the need to maintain it as the official language for both written and verbal communication; in line with the Ministry of Interior’s strategy, which aims to promote national identity in all of its activities and programs.”
Moreover, Major Fawaz emphasized the Security Media’s attention to the Arabic language; which is demonstrated by the unrelenting keenness to carry out proofreading of all materials and texts issued by the department, including press releases, publications, and other journals. He also noted that the department has adopted the Arabic language, as the official language in all internal correspondence and is keen to holding all of its workshops, training courses, and lectures in the “mother tongue”.
Abdullah Shaheen, Media Expert and Press Branch Manager at the Security Media Department, noted that the Arabic language represents the identity of a nation, it is the repository of its culture, literature, and heritage, which require preserving. He also pointed out to the innovative approaches, initiatives and programs taking place in the UAE, which aim at enhancing the status of Arabic language and instilling love of Arabic in the future generations.
Adding further, he indicated that the Press Branch is committed to using the Arabic language in all of its publications, and to preparing and issuing press releases using a subtle language, with easy words that integrate classical and modern language; taking into account quality and the contemporary linguistic style.
He also noted that a professional proofreader is present at all times at the branch, to conduct linguistic review and correct any spelling mistakes. He added: “The Press Branch provides media outlets with linguistically appropriate materials. Additionally, proofreading at the department is witnessing remarkable progress day after day.” In conclusion, he revealed that the Press Branch is also carrying out linguistic review and proofreading services for police-related publications issued by other departments at Abu Dhabi Police.
It is worth mentioning that the Arabic language enjoys particular support and attention from the federal government, which holds a wide range of initiatives and conferences to discuss issues related to language and identity. In this spirit, the emirate of Dubai is currently hosting the 4th International Conference for Arabic language, which commenced on May 6 and will continue until May 10, under the auspices of His Highness, UAE vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.
