To Detect Red Light Jumping Over-speeding and Stopping Vehicles on Pedestrian Crossings

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police warned motorists against red-light jumping amid the activation of additional surveillance cameras on 46 intersections in Al Maryah Island that can detect violators as of Sunday.

The new system complements the traffic control systems that were previously installed on Abu Dhabi Island to detect traffic violations, notably jumping the red light and exceeding legal speed limits. “The new system falls in line with the integrated project to improve traffic safety at intersections in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, which was initiated by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate in 2012. As a part of the project, 150 light-controlled junctions will be fitted with surveillance cameras in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region within the next five years.

Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police said: “Traffic violations logged by surveillance systems at intersections in Al Maryah Island include jumping the red light, failure to respect lane rules, stopping vehicles on pedestrian crossings, failure to adhere to designated legal speed limits, overtaking at intersections, making turns or U-turns from the wrong lanes, and failure to give priority to pedestrians.”

Adding further, Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi noted that traffic monitoring is one of the key traffic safety improvement projects on the roads and intersections in Abu Dhabi. “It is an integrated project encompassing the necessary components to improve traffic safety, which is based on six pillars known as the 6Es +I of traffic safety integration, allowing continuous assessment of the engineering of intersections and their impact on traffic safety and.”

He also explained that the high-tech traffic surveillance cameras use infrared technology, capturing images without the use of flash to catch violators on all lanes. They are 3D thermal cameras covering more than five lanes in each direction. They are also multifunctional, and include infrared license plate readers. They can determine the numbers of passing vehicles, their type, estimate the average speed, and determining the number and direction of pedestrians when traffic signals turn green and red.”

On the occasion of the 31st GCC Traffic Week, which is held this year under the slogan “Your Choice Determines Your Destiny”; Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi called upon motorists to make the right decisions by avoiding red-light jumping, over-speeding at  intersections, stopping vehicles on pedestrian crossings, or making turns or U-turns from the wrong lanes. He also stressed the importance of spreading the Traffic Week slogan, which represents the police’s commitment to promote social partnership that is instrumental to achieve interaction and communication with the various segments of society. “Community members play an important and vital positive role in achieving a radical change towards comprehensive traffic safety development, with the aim of preserving lives and property.

In conclusion, Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi stressed that the directorate is exerting considerable efforts to curb traffic accidents resulting in deaths and serious injuries by promoting traffic control and installing modern automated control systems for internal and external roads in Abu Dhabi. The directorate also endeavors to intensify traffic awareness through the Abu Dhabi traffic program called “Together.” This program is ongoing on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube and disseminates traffic culture through media and lectures and enhances communication with all segments of society.
