The Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center called for the concerted efforts of families and educators with the relevant authorities to inculcate road safety habits among the youth. This outreach call was launched along the sidelines of the Center’s participation in the GCC Traffic Week events at the countrywide level, through a wide diversity of awareness activities and programs, such as the awareness pavilion at the Traffic Village in Ajman, the free drawing pavilion for children, and distribution of traffic awareness brochures.
Major General Dr. Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Higher Committee for Child Protection at the Ministry of Interior stressed the need to increase awareness of traffic safety among all segments of society, and to remind them of the importance of observing traffic rules. “Maintaining the safety of road users and protecting them against the risks associated with road accidents is a shared responsibility between traffic authorities, community members and public and private institutions,” he said.
Adding further, he noted that traffic safety education should begin at an early age, through a wide range of innovative and creative methods that cover all of the age-appropriate security and safety aspects for children, and provided by highly qualified and well-trained individuals.
For his part, Major Dr. Mohammed Khalifa Al Ali, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Centre, noted that the center endeavors to inculcate good traffic safety habits in children via a number of educational outreach events intended at boosting awareness of both children and their parents. Such events aim at reducing traffic accidents and their resulting human and material losses, as well as highlighting the key shortcomings and errors and the proper solutions.
Major Dr, Al Ali also said: “The free drawing pavilion focused on encouraging children to create drawings that express their talents and offer safe driving tips to their parents and other road users.” He also noted that the program included a number of competitions designed to instill safe driving behaviors in children, and traffic-themed photographs to encourage children to reject ill-behaviors; in addition to a variety of awareness competitions at the Traffic Village Theater, and raffle prizes.
Adding further, he said: “The outreach program was also intended to acquaint children with the rules of the road, which include: the proper ways to enter and exit vehicles or school buses; the proper and safe way to cross streets at the designated crosswalks; how to sit properly in buses or vehicles; the need to wear a seatbelt and to observe traffic rules.” In conclusion, Major Dr. Al Ali noted that relevant brochures with these important tips were distributed to visitors. “The MoI Child Protection Center has also utilized the different social networking sites to send out a wide variety of tips and guidance messages to community members, which stress the need to adhere to traffic rules.
