ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, March 11th 2015 [ME NewsWire]
Abu Dhabi Police recently arrested a Gulf national in violation of the Residency Law for possession with intent to sell 15 kg of marijuana (hashish) in the city of Al Ain. The arrest was carried out as the sun set - hence the operation has been deemed the “Operation Sunset”.
Colonel Dr. Rashid Mohammad Borshid, Head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), indicated that the Anti-Drug Section in Al Ain had received confidential information regarding the suspect`s possession of a large amount of drugs that he was planning to sell. After reviewing, analyzing and validating the received information, a security plan was established and a search and investigations team was formed. The team was equipped with the modern tools necessary to thwart the suspect’s intended operation.
Colonel Borshid said: “Following preliminary investigations, we were able to uncover the intended plan to traffic drugs and to reach the suspect involved in the criminal activity. The team devised a plan and contacted the suspect to buy the entire quantity in the suspect’s possession, valuing 70,000 AED as numbered by law. Without arousing the suspicions of the suspect, an officer from the Anti-Narcotics Federal Directorate General was able to act inconspicuously and utilize his extensive skills and experience to set up an opportunity for the Anti-Drug Section team to foil the suspect’s attempt to sell the drugs.”
For his part, Colonel Sultan Suwayeh Al Darmaki, Chief of the Anti-Drug Section at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), stressed the importance of the operation and of its swift success in controlling the attempt to traffic drugs and in stopping the criminal activity of the suspect (S.A., 34 years old). The team was successful in their operation and had been cautious not to arouse any suspicions.
Moreover, Colonel Al Darmaki noted that the team of the Anti-Drug Section managed to conduct surveillance and arrest the suspect at the same location where the transaction of buying and selling took place in Al Ain. “We confiscated the drugs the suspect had in his possession, which included 15 rectangular pieces of hashish wrapped in plastic bags, weighing 15 kg,” he said.
Concluding, the Chief of the Anti-Drug Section said: “in line with the comprehensive strategy in place to integrate all efforts in order to eradicate this illegal trade and to prevent drug-related risks, the Abu Dhabi Police will relentlessly fight against the scourge of drugs in order to protect the country and its community members, and to counter all attempts to smuggle and promote drugs.”
