Ministry of Interior Participates in the World Congress on Juvenile Justice in Switzerland

Showcasing its Efforts in Preventing Juvenile Delinquency

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, January 31st 2015 [ME NewsWire]

A Ministry of Interior delegation took part in the World Congress on Juvenile Justice, which was held at the International Conference Center in Geneva - CICG (Switzerland). The week-long congress was attended representatives of over 90 countries and more than 110 of NGOs from around the world to discuss best practices with respect children rights and juvenile justice. The congress also aims at promoting collaboration among countries and civil society actors in a bid to raise public awareness and implement the existing international standards in this field.

Brigadier Ahmed Mohammed Nehkairah, Head of Human Rights Department, Ministry of Interior, Chairman of the Juvenile Care Center's Steering Committee, reiterated the keenness of the ministry to participate in such international events; especially the ones that showcase international efforts designed to provide the best projects and services in the field of juvenile care and rehabilitation. He pointed that such participations contribute significantly to exchanging knowledge and expertise and reviewing the best leading international practices, initiatives and projects.

For his part, Major Dr. Mohammed Khalifa Al Ali, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Centre (head of the delegation), said that participation at the congress was an ideal opportunity for the ministry’s delegation to showcase its experiences and exchange opinions, knowledge, and expertise with relevant bodies from around the world; given that this is the first time that government representatives and civil society actors come together to discuss the future of juvenile justice.

During the week-long congress, the MoI’s delegation made two different presentations. The first presentation gave a detailed overview of the efficiency of juvenile delinquency prevention programs, as well as the innovation and creativity in designing and presenting age-appropriate programs. The presentation also tackled the skills and characteristics required in care givers in order for such programs to be effective and successful.

In the second presentation, the UAE delegation explained the role and duties of the Juvenile Care Center in Abu Dhabi, as well as the programs and services it provides in the field of juvenile care. Furthermore, the presentation showcased a comprehensive study about the juvenile delinquency risk factors (the juvenile being a risk to himself and to others – and the risk of others being a risk to juveniles), including an analysis of the factors contributing to juvenile delinquency, and the proper ways to treat and rehabilitate juveniles.

The presentation also showcased examples of the programs that are presently being implemented, such as the post-release care program, which contributes to engaging social organizations in reintegrating juveniles into society. Another example was the family forums program, which involves families of juveniles in the proper post-care efforts, because they are an essential part of juveniles’ treatment and rehabilitation.

The presentations were highly acclaimed by the participants of various categories and scientific disciplines taking part at the congress, who expressed their wish to strengthen cooperation with the UAE, and learn about the latest developments made in the field of juvenile care, through a series of side meetings with the UAE delegation during the congress.

The UAE delegation included First Lieutenant Ahmed Al Bloushi, In-charge of Strategy and Development Unit; Social Care Specialist Ruqiya Abdo Sahyef; and Specialist Marwa Al Shehhi from the Juvenile Care Center at Abu Dhabi Police.
