Under the patronage of Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, the Eighth Sporting Event for the Ministry of Interior’s staff members commenced. The events, organized by the Police Sports Association for the ministry’s staff members across its departments and sectors in Abu Dhabi, will continue for ten days.
The opening ceremony, which was recently held at the Police College, was attended by Colonel Abdul Malik Jani, Head of Police Sports Association Department; Colonel Saif Al Ketbi, Police College Director; Colonel Mohammed Hamid bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri, Strategy and Performance Development Director General and Secretary General of the Police Sports Association; and a number of officers, non-commissioned officers, civilians and representatives of police sectors taking part in the activities.
Six sectors will be taking part in the activities, including the General Secretariat of the Office of His Highness Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior; the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior; the Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Naturalization, Residency and Ports Affairs; the Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Resources and Support Services; the Civil Defense General Directorate; and the Police College.
The events will include a variety of sports competitions notably: the Five-a-Side and Seven-a-Side Football Tournaments; the Beach Volleyball; the Tug of War Tournament; the Swimming Championship; the Pool Championship; the Pistol Shooting Championship; the Bowling Championship; the Running Championship; the race-walking Championship; the Electronic Football Championship; the Ping-Pong Championship; as well as educational contests for men and women; the Chess Championship; and the Fitness and Challenge Championship.
The sports competitions are being held in several places, including the Ministry of; the Police College; the Police Officers Club in Abu Dhabi; Zayed Sports City; and Al Jazira Sports Club.
In his statement on this occasion, Colonel Jani said, “The Ministry of Interior is keen to organize sports activities, out of its firm belief in the valuable role of sporting events in building comprehensive police character and instilling self-confidence and fair competition among the ministry’s staff members.”
“Organizing sporting events for MoI staff members for the eighth consecutive year by the Police Sports Association, is made possible thanks to the full-fledged continuous support of the police leadership, which endeavors to bring success to such events and foster harmony and stronger relations between colleagues,” he added. Colonel Jani also noted that this event aims at fostering brotherly ties, creating an atmosphere of love, unity and trust and promoting sports competitiveness and excellent physical preparation, rather than winning titles.
For his part, Colonel Al Dhaheri stressed the importance of sports among police member. “Sports activity builds character, and helps maintain police members’ physical, psychological and mental health. The Ministry of Interior is keen to support and develop athletic abilities by organizing such events for all of its staff members, in a bid to build police members that are mentally and psychologically fit to carry out the tasks assigned to them.”
During the first day of the Seven-a-Side Football Tournament, which is being held at the Police College stadiums, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior’s sector defeated the General Secretariat of the Office of His Highness Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior’s sector with a score of 1 to 0; while the match between the sector of the Civil Defense General Directorate and the Police College sector ended in a draw of 1 to 1.
In the Tug of War Tournament, which is being held at the Police College, the General Secretariat of the Office of His Highness Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior’s sector won against the sector of the Civil Defense 2 - 0; while the Police College sector won against the Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Resources and Support Services’ sector 2- 0.
In the educational contests for men, the Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Naturalization, Residency and Ports Affairs’ sector won against the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior’s sector 4 - 3; while the Civil Defense sector won against the Police College sector 3 - 2.
In the educational contests for women, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior’s sector won against the Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Naturalization, Residency and Ports Affairs’ sector 3-0; while the Police College sector won against the Civil Defense sector 3 - 0.
Furthermore, in the bowling competitions, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior’s sector won against the Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Naturalization, Residency and Ports Affairs’ sector 3 - 0; while the Civil Defense sector won against the Police College sector 3 - 0.
The sports competitions are set to continue, whereas the Pistol Shooting Championship will be held at the shooting range of the Police Officers Club in Abu Dhabi, in addition to the educational contests; the Seven-a-Side Football Tournament; and the various sporting activities.
