The 2nd Annual Gulf Obesity Surgery Society (GOSS) Meeting, one of the biggest obesity events in the Middle East commenced today at the Raffles Hotel Dubai under the patronage of Dubai Health Authority (DHA).
Hosted by the Emirates Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Interest Group (EOMSIG), the conference is the only dedicated platform in the Middle East to address obesity which has become world’s biggest public health problem. The GOSS Meeting brought bariatric healthcare professionals together as well as International Delegates in Middle East to address the global concern. The conference consisted of live surgeries programme, including three detailed workshops and over 20 sessions with keynote lectures and oral presentations.
The highlight of the conference was the latest technique of Primary Obesity Surgery, Endoluminal (POSE) which was demonstrated for the first time in Dubai through this conference in order to address treatment of obesity without surgery. The POSE technique which is done endoscopically through mouth mimics results like Sleeve Gastrectomy, one of the very popular surgeries for morbid obesity.
Dr Girish Juneja, the chairperson of the scientific committee informed, “expert speakers from various parts of the globe have teamed up with GOSS 2014 to create symposia in obesity science and management. More than 100 international & local expert obesity professional are arriving in Dubai to air their views on this health problem.”

As part of its participation at the GCC Military Forum recently held in Bahrain, the Ministry of Interior presented a paper on evolution of Emirati women’s work within the Police force. The paper was presented by Major Amina Mohamed Khamis Al Baloushi, Chairperson of the Emirates Women Police Association (EWPA).
Major Al Baloushi gave an overview of Emirati women’s journey and achievements made under the care and support of the higher leadership. She referred to the decision of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU) and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF), to declare 28th August each year as ‘Emirati Women’s Day’, to celebrate the establishment of the General Women's Union (GWU). All the local and federal institutions will observe this day to commemorate the national achievements attained by GWU in terms of welfare, giving and development.
Major Al Baloushi also spoke of the experience of the Emirates Women Police Association (EWPA), showcasing its vision, mission and goals, in addition to the remarkable achievements attained at the local and international levels; particularly hosting the first regional women police conference.
Major Amina Mohamed Khamis Al Baloushi praised the attention provided by the Police General Headquarters to the female members in the police force, by providing them with all forms of support, empowerment and care. “The UAE has dedicated significant attention to women’s role in general and in police work in particular, and empowered women to take part in policing services,” she said; noting that the Women Police Association was established to empower women at the countrywide level and currently comprises 5,000 members.
