The Ministry of Interior (MoI), represented by the Higher Committee for Child Protection, will observe the Universal Children's Day tomorrow, which is celebrated worldwide event on the 20th of November. The MoI asserted its keenness to implement several initiatives and projects to enhance child protection from every potential danger. These initiatives and projects are in response to the directives of Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and his commitment to the UAE to become a hub of child protection and security while elevating its status as a role model in the region. These commitments will be realized through the effective and precautionary measures that have been established in order to promote the security and safety of our communities.

On the occasion of the internationally and annually celebrated Universal Children’s Day, Major General Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Higher Committee for Child Protection at the Ministry of Interior, delivered a speech: “Each year, on the 20th of November, the world comes together to celebrate Universal Children's Day. This day shall be observed as a day of fraternity and understanding and of activities that promote the welfare of the world's children. This day marks the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child concluded in 1989. The UN proposed that each government observes this historic day as they see fit and to celebrate in ways that are most appropriately suited for their community. The date of the 20th of November marks the day upon which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989. On this day, several topics are discussed related to the rights of the child, such as: the right to life, the right to health, the right to education, the right to housing, the right to an adequate standard of living, the right to food, and the right to play.”

The Secretary General highlighted the significant efforts undertaken by the MoI to enhance child protection – most notably the decision to set up the Child Protection Centre (CPC). “The Centre aims to protect children against any potential crime or phenomena that may encourage the exploitation of children, and additionally seeks to develop the proper solutions and initiatives in order to protect them. It also seeks to monitor any potential cyber exploitation or crimes against children, and any attempts of abuse committed by sex offenders to lure children and teenagers. The Centre also endeavors to monitor any wrongful behaviors or violations at cyber cafes or through public networks by documenting the identity of users and tracking their browsing history; and additionally seeks to spread awareness regarding the optimal use of the internet among families and individuals,” Major General Al Nuaimi stated.

Adding further, Major General Al Nuaimi expressed the MoI’s delight to take part in this global event which emphasizes its interest in all segments of society- and for the children in particular, as they make up a large proportion of the society. “The Ministry has endeavored to improve and develop the services provided to this segment by qualifying and training competent and highly skilled staff members- of whom are fully aware of how to deal with this core segment. These efforts reflect the keenness of the UAE Government to achieve developmental leaps that serve our society,” said Major General Al Nuaimi. Moreover, he pointed out that the UAE has made great strides in the areas of child protection and in upgrading the level of all child-related services.

For his part, Major Dr. Mohammed Khalifa Al Ali, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Centre, stressed the keenness of the Centre to boost child protection. “The general legal principles are imposed upon parents to care for their children, and to encourage them to redouble their efforts to protect their children from any risks that they might not be aware of due to their age,” he said.

“Celebrating the Universal Children’s Day is an opportunity to renew our promise to exert further efforts and to provide all means of protection for our children from every danger possible,” emphasized Major Dr. Al Ali. Furthermore, the Director of the Ministry of Interior’s CPC reiterated that the CPC continues to implement several initiatives that contribute to achieving the aspirations of the police leadership and to provide the necessary enablers to protect children from risks.

“Through the implementation of these initiatives, the Centre is able to communicate and interact with community members, most particularly the children, through its presence in public places and spread awareness regarding the nature of the Centre’s work. By organizing various exhibitions and lectures, the Centre is also able to address the questions and inquiries of the public, raise awareness, and promote a culture of child protection through the integration of security entities,” said Major Dr. Al Ali.
