MoI Attends INTERPOL Meeting in Monaco

ME NewsWire

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, November 6th 2014

The Ministry of Interior took part in the INTERPOL General Assembly meeting, which opened in Monaco on Monday November 3. The UAE delegation to the five-day event was headed by Brigadier Mohammed Ghadir Al Ketbi, Deputy Director General of the Federal Criminal Police.

The meeting was inaugurated by Prince Albert II of Monaco and tackled   a number of topics on the agenda, including the selection of Germany’s Dr. Jürgen Stock as candidate to be the next Secretary General of the INTERPOL, succeeding American Ronald K. Noble.

The MoI delegation included Colonel Abdul Wahid Al Hammadi, Acting Head of the Interpol Department at the Ministry of Interior; and Captain Hamad Abdullah Al Zaabi, from the Directorate General of the Federal Criminal Police.

The meeting comes at a momentous occasion as it marks a centenary of international police cooperation following the First International Criminal Police Congress in Monaco 100 years ago in 1914. The centenary meeting serves as a forum for police officers and judicial representatives from 24 countries to find ways to cooperate on solving crimes, notably arrest and extradition procedures, identification techniques and the idea of centralized criminal records.

It is worth mentioning that the General Assembly is the INTERPOL's supreme governing body. It is composed of delegates appointed by each member country and meets annually to take all major decisions related to policy, activities and programs. It also elects the Organization's Executive Committee and takes decisions by a simple majority in the form of resolutions.
