Traffic Safety Reaches Record Highs at GITEX
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, October 21st 2014 [ME NewsWire]
The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police revealed that the full-fledged campaign “Together”, organized by the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate to reduce traffic accidents has reached more than 114,000 likes on Facebook. Moreover, there were approximately 17,000 followers who followed the updates on the GITEX Technology Week on Twitter, whereas visitors interacted significantly with the live coverage page of the event, as well as the hashtag created in the framework of the campaign, to provide visitors with a variety of information and instructions about traffic safety. Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police, noted, “Awareness of traffic safety does not start on the road, but long before that. To this end, we have used our different social media accounts as a platform to spread the culture of traffic awareness and encourage people to adopt the correct practices before they take to the road, with a view to ensure the safety of all road users, motorists and pedestrians alike.”
Adding further, Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi stressed that the webpage was designed to promote productive interaction with the public through social media. He said, “Through these valuable communication channels, the directorate provided members of the public with the opportunity to ask questions, and have their queries answered; as well as to express their viewpoints and engage actively in the debates; thereby enhancing the traffic safety culture that we endeavor to instill in people in order to save lives.”
"Social media is the interstate highway for knowledge flow,” he continued.
In conclusion, Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi noted that the ‘Together’ initiative for Traffic Safety, since its inception in 2012, embodies Abu Dhabi’s ambitious target of reducing traffic fatalities to zero by 2030, and falls in line with the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030. Since then, and through the ‘Together’ initiative, the directorate has also introduced several innovative campaigns targeting the various social segments, to spread awareness and reduce inappropriate traffic behaviors among students, families, workers and young people.
