George Freeman, Minister for Life Sciences Unveils the Partnership between Synexus and the NHS

NEWCASTLE, England - Wednesday, September 17th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- At a celebratory event at Chandos House, London last night Synexus shared details of the partnership between Synexus and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust which has seen them jointly open the North East Research Centre at Hexham Hospital. George Freeman, Minister for Life Sciences officially opened the Centre unveiling a plaque that will be housed there.

The partnership is very exciting as it is the first of its kind between a private company and the NHS and potentially showcases a new way of supporting clinical research in the UK.

Speaking at the event, Dr Jonathan Sheffield, Chief Executive of the NIHR said: “Clinical research is a vital part of the work of the NHS and we know from polls and surveys that clinical research is something that patients really value. Last year alone more than 600,000 patients took part in studies that the NIHR Clinical Research Network helped to deliver. Working with private sector organisations, such as Synexus, helps the NHS offer more opportunities to more patients to get involved in clinical research. This new partnership takes us one step closer to achieving an NHS where participation in a clinical research study is a treatment option for all patients, no matter where they are treated or what condition they have. It is crucial that we continue to support the delivery of clinical research in the NHS, in this and other ways, so that the UK stays at the cutting edge of medicine and the forefront of medical technology.”

Sarah Beeby, Synexus’ UK Managing Director said: “This is a very exciting partnership as it potentially signals a new way of working for the clinical trials sector that will enable UK patients to access new treatments and will also help ensure the UK clinical trials industry remains competitive on the global stage. This is groundbreaking and, we hope, the start of something that will be replicated across the UK so that even more people can benefit.”

Synexus continues to experience global success which is driving its continued expansion. Its order book is at a record high and continuing to grow.

Professor Richard Walker, clinical director of research and development at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Synexus. They are a very successful company with more than 20 years’ experience in running research centres world-wide. This partnership will provide us with opportunities to work together to deliver clinical research studies relating to a variety of conditions focussing on those conditions which affect large numbers of people. This partnership breaks-down the traditional division between NHS and private research so we are very excited about the potential this has to offer a blueprint for the future.”
