The Ministry of Environment and Water signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Emirates Park Zoo and the Emirates Animal Welfare Society on Tuesday during the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition 2014 (ADIHEX). This step aims to develop cooperation in the area of animal welfare, enhance public awareness of the importance of protecting animals and their rights, to preserve public health and the safety of our environment.
Major General Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Chairman and owner of the Emirates Park Zoo, signed the MoU, while Engineer Saif Mohammed Al-Shara', Assistant Undersecretary for Agricultural and Livestock Affairs signed the agreement on behalf of the Ministry of Environment and Water and Rashid Salem Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, vice president of EAWS signed it on behalf of the Emirates Animal Welfare Society.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) sets the foundations and principles that would contribute to enhancing joint cooperation between all parties to protect public health in the Emirate and respect animal welfare principles. It also stems out of the parties’ belief in the importance of maintaining public health by preserving animals’ health and protecting them against all damages that may affect them; because animals’ health and safety are the key elements that contribute to protecting public health and safety of society.
Major General Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi stated that the agreement aims to enhance EAWS objectives, with a view to protect the animal welfare and environment in the UAE and coordinating with global organizations in order to exchange information regarding endangered animals and the means to preserve them.
He also stressed the importance of taking care of animals and treating them with compassion, highlighting the keenness to unify national efforts to nurture generations that are fully conscious of the importance of environment and sustainable development issues; in addition to enhancing their ability to face both present and future challenges.
For his part, Engineer Saif Mohammed Al-Shara' noted that we have duties of compassion and humanity towards animals, because animals are God’s creatures just like human beings. “Kindness towards animals and respect of their rights is a mark of a civilized society,” he said.
He added that preserving public health and safety of the environment as well as prevention from environmental damage and disease that may affect animals and be passed on to humans is an important issue for the municipal system that always strives to enhance the quality of life in Abu Dhabi.
