In collaboration with the competent authorities of the Abu Dhabi Police, Civil Defense teams extinguished a fire that broke out today, Thursday, in the bunk beds of an apartment in a 17-story building on Zayed the First Street (“Electra Street”), in Abu Dhabi. A firefighter injured in the fire was transferred to Khalifa Hospital in Abu Dhabi for treatment, and three minor suffocation cases were treated onsite under the supervision of the paramedics of the Emergency and Public Safety Department at Abu Dhabi Police.
Colonel Mohammed Obaid Al Zaabi, from the General Directorate of Civil Defense in Abu Dhabi, explained that the Operation Room received a call about the fire at 1 p.m. “Immediately after the call was received, firefighting and ambulance teams, along with one of the Air Wing Department’s helicopters, were dispatched to the location in order to evacuate trapped individuals and ensure their safety,” he said.
Colonel Al Zaabi also explained that within 10 minutes, firefighters from the Al Madina, Al Falah, and Al Bateen fire stations managed to extinguish and control the fire. “Traffic patrols and ambulance vehicles rushed to the scene of the fire, and the firefighting teams managed to stop the spread of fire and evacuated the building as a precautionary measure. Traffic patrols, ambulance teams and crime scene experts also rushed to the scene; investigation regarding the circumstances of the incident is still ongoing. Captain Mahmoud Karam Khouri, from the Al Madina fire station supervised the operations,” he said.
Colonel Al Zaabi called upon all concerned parties to ensure the provision and implementation of prevention and safety standards in all facilities and buildings.
