Ibrahim Abdul Malik’s Council Recommends Establishing Anti-doping Centers and Promoting Awareness Programs

As Part of the MoI’s Initiatives

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, July 5th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

Participants at the United in Responsibility; youth and stimulants Ramadan Council discussed the subject of youth and stimulants. They stressed the importance of establishing specialized centers to combat the scourge of illicit steroids and stimulants, as well as the need to punish traffickers. They also recommended the establishment of a federal department or authority to manage and regulate the anti-doping operations, determine competency and regulate sports centers at the countrywide level.

The council was organized by the Law Respect Culture Bureau, the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and hosted by Ibrahim Abdul Malik, Secretary General of the Public Authority for Youth and Sports Welfare.

Participants called for promoting programs aimed at raising the awareness of parents and community members about the dangers of stimulants and steroids, as well as spreading the safety and prevention culture by acquainting school students with the adverse effects of these drugs and their dangers. They also called for passing legislations to reduce the trade of these stimulants, allocating budgets to support youth centers so as to enable them to curb the use of steroids, creating a database for steroid and stimulants’ users, and establishing a set of standards to license gyms.

The council was attended by Ahmed AbdulMalik Ahli and Hamad Al Rahoomi, members of the Federal National Council (FNC); Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Salah Obeid Al Ghoul, Director of Law Respect Culture Bureau, the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior; Marwan Bin Ghalaita, Chairman, Board of Directors, Al Nassr FC; Ahmed Al Falasi, President of the UAE Swimming Federation; Ahmed al-Hashemi, Chairman of the National Anti-Doping Agency; Issa Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the UAE Handball Federation; Lt. Colonel Dr. Juma Sultan Al Shamsi, from the Dubai Police; Mr. Fakhruddin Abdul Majeed Taher, secretary of the UAE Taekwondo and Karate Association; Mr. Jamal Mohammed Al Hammadi, Director of Youth Activities and Cultural Department in the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare; and Hashim Al Wali from the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare.

Discussions were moderated by Journalist Hassan Habib, and focused on the role of youth, being the major pillar of society. He stressed the need to reach out to the youth, identify their needs and provide them with the necessary support as well as to identify their intellectual and cultural tendencies.

Speakers emphasized that the councils represent a valuable source of thought and deliberation. And given that young people are the wealth of any society and of any country’s future, the UAE is striving to preserve them and encourage them to acquire sciences and knowledge before taking part in sports competitions, noting that steroids endanger the lives of their users and cause nefarious health risks.

The Council, which is organized by the Ministry of Interior, complements the initiative that started in 2012 to host such councils, as an effort from the MoI to involve the UAE citizens and provide them with the opportunity to discuss the important topics of interest to the public.
