ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Friday, June 27th 2014
The Abu Dhabi Police GHQ will be distributing 30,000 Iftar meals to motorists travelling on the internal and external road users in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region as of the first day of Ramadan. Iftar meals will also be distributed to individuals arriving and departing through border crossings in Al Ain and Al Ghuwaifat in coordination with the Ports Security Department, before the Maghrib call to prayer. This humanitarian initiative aims to revive the values of solidarity among community members during the Holy Month of Ramadan, which is characterized with its atmosphere of worship and faith, sublime meanings and noble values.
Major General Mohammed bin Al Awadhi Al Menhali, Director General of Police Operations at Abu Dhabi Police said: “This initiative is undertaken by the Community Police, as well as the various patrols affiliated with police stations across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region. It falls in line with the directives of Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, on the need to strengthen partnerships with all sectors of society, especially road users, in an effort to cut down the number of traffic accidents caused by speeding drivers hurrying to make it home in time for Iftar”.
For his part, Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate stated: “The directorate will be distributing Iftar meals before the Maghrib call to prayer at all intersections across Abu Dhabi. This initiative is carried out in collaboration with Al Ihsan Charity Association and Saaed Society to Reduce Traffic Accidents, with a view to promote traffic awareness and avoid the Ramadan rush hour particularly before Iftar when drivers tend to increase their speed as they try to reach their homes; which is bound to cause deadly accidents resulting in serious injuries and deaths.
Furthermore, Brigadier Al Harithi urged motorists to observe speed limits on internal and external roads, maintain safe distance between vehicles, pay attention to any potential surprises on the roads, use seatbelts, and avoid using mobile phones while driving. He also called upon them to drive carefully, especially during the Holy Month of Ramadan and before Iftar time to avoid accidents, due to haste, lack of focus, and tension caused by the anxiety of not making it on time for the Iftar. “This may force some motorists to react negatively by exceeding the designated speed limits; an unacceptable behavior that could lead to drastic consequences,” added Brigadier Al Harithi, stressing the importance of abiding by the traffic law.
Lt. Colonel Mubarak Bin Muhairom, Head of the Community Police Department, indicated that the the Iftar meals distribution initiative has been carried out by Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, in collaboration with the ‘Abdul Jalil Al Fahim’s Waqf,’ throughout the holy month of Ramadan each year, as an expression of social cohesion, which is a feature of UAE society.
He added: “In collaboration with police patrols, the Community Police Department will send out foot patrols to distribute free Iftar meals to drivers. Iftar meals will also be distributed at service stations and traffic intersections, as well as to individuals arriving and departing through border crossings in Al Ain and Al Ghuwaifat in the Western Region, the Community Police Affairs Sections at the Abu Dhabi Police Stations, in the external regions, in Al Ain and the Western Region.
