Applied Technology High School Students in Abu Dhabi Attend Lecture on the Law Respect Concept

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Friday, June 6th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

The Law Respect Culture Bureau, the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H. Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Interior, organized an awareness lecture for students of the Applied Technology High School for boys in Abu Dhabi. The lecture tackled the concept of the law respect culture and its impact on understanding the meaning of the rights and obligations of each and every individual.

The lecture was delivered by Captain Abdullah Al Dahmani who explained the concept of law respect and the purpose of establishing the Law Respect Culture Bureau. He  also explained to  students the traditional legal maxim “Ignorantia juris non excusat”; meaning “Ignorance of the law is no excuse”: “In observance of this maxim, the UAE has given priority to educate individuals who lack sufficient education and culture by simplifying laws and explaining them to the various classes and segments of society, each in their own language.”

Furthermore, Captain Al Dahmani said that the main objective of the Law Respect Culture Bureau is to make law respect an inherent part of the values and ethics of society and ensure that it is not observed solely out of fear of punishment. “Law respect is the finest forms of urbanization and development of individuals and communities. Respect for the rule of law, which regulates relations between human beings, achieves equality and justice and prevents offences is the coveted objective of every civilized society,” stressed Captain Al Dahmani.

Moreover, Captain Al Dahmani highlighted the reasons for respecting the law, stating that the law defines the rights and duties of the individual within society. “It also protects and preserves these rights and achieves justice and equality for all,” he added; noting that those who do not respect the law cannot expect others to do so; this would cause chaos and insecurity.

On the same note, Captain Al Dahmani tackled the keys ways by which individuals can adopt this culture as a daily practice. “Individuals need to seek basic legal knowledge, which can provide them with the necessary protection in all their behaviors. This knowledge must be obtained from reliable sources and should not rely on rumors or perceptions of others.” He also explained that the ‘Law’ does not only include  legislations; it is also the set of rules and procedures governing human and institutional  behavior, such as  traditions, ethics and religious values that work alongside the law to maintain the stability of societies,” explained Captain Al Dahmani.

Captain Al Dahmani noted that students enjoy a set of rights just like any other member of society. These rights include the right to a good education, the right to security within a good school environment, the right to be respected by his teachers, staff members and other colleagues and the right to be appreciated for good conduct in class and at school. “Student also have commitments and obligations set out by the law, such as observing  the policies, rules and regulations stipulated by the school system and participating in a positive school environment and supporting it,” concluded Captain Al Dahmani.

At the end of the lecture, the lecturer highlighted a set of behaviors punishable by the law and the relevant penalties, such as theft, vandalism, physical assault and verbal abuse. He also stressed that students must have ethics and get accustomed to respect laws if they are to become an integral part of their culture.
