ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, June 9th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

Abu Dhabi Police, represented by Community Police Department, took part in the activities of the charity forum “Sougha”, designed to raise awareness about the issues of people with special needs. The forum kicked off on Monday, at Mafraq Hotel in Abu Dhabi, to display and sell products manufactured by students at rehabilitation workshops and the creations of talented students with special needs. This event is part of the social activities and events organized by the Community Police Department with key partners.

The forum continues for three days and will be open to the public from 10 am until 8 pm at Mafraq Hotel. It is sponsored by Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care, represented by the Abu Dhabi Centre for Care and Rehabilitation of People with Special Needs, with the cooperation of the Community Police Department.

Lt. Colonel Mubarak Bin Muhairom, Head of Department of Community Police, said that these events are part of the activities organized by the Community Police Department in collaboration with its partners in order to boost cooperation between members of the Community Police and the various institutions and local, governmental and private departments, with a view to provide security and stability to community members and promote social relations between both sides.

For his part, Mohamed Fadel Al Hameli, Secretary-General of Zayed Center for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs, said that the key objective behind participation in such societal events is to enhance cooperation between Zayed Center for Humanitarian Care and the Community Police Department at Abu Dhabi Police. “The Community Police is always keen to organize such social events with a view to serve the category of people with special needs, to encourage them and integrate them into society.

The event is co-organized by a number of partners and institutions such as: Health Authority - Abu Dhabi (HAAD), Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), Abu Dhabi Municipality, UAE Red Crescent, BaniYas Sports Club, and Al Mafraq Hospital.

Ms. Haya Abdullah Bani Hammad, Director of the Abu Dhabi Centre for Care and Rehabilitation, said that ADCCR provides specialized centers for training and career rehabilitation, especially handicraft workshops developed by the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GIZ), for rehabilitation of people with special needs and their integration in the work market.

She added: “The program includes 18 specialized workshops designed to rehabilitate male and female students and provide them with the necessary skills to design and create traditional handicrafts and other products intended for sale, with all proceeds going to support the foundation.

The UAE Red Crescent also participated in the forum, with a view to enhance communication with society and help raise awareness about the suffering of people with special needs.

Mario Scotto, General Manager of Mafraq Hotel, praised the event and said: “We are proud to be part of such a humanitarian event, as it reflects our keenness to serve the community, as well as our full support to Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care, out of our sense of social responsibility towards community members.”

This event is held for the first time, with a view to showcase the talents and skills of  students with special needs and to encourage them to be creative and innovative in their work, as they see their products being sold, acclaimed and encouraged by other community members.

The forum/market will include a number of live musical shows, as well as an exhibition of artwork and handicrafts, to raise awareness about the importance of providing care and rehabilitation to students with special needs. More than 400 students from the career rehabilitation workshops and talented students from ADCCR participated in this event.

BaniYas Sports Club signed a contract with Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care officials to buy 3000 scarves made by the students, and talks were underway to buy simple handmade gift items made by students, as a way to show them support.
