ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Friday, May 16th 2014

A delegation from the Abu Dhabi Police Juveniles Care Center visited one of the centers affiliated to the International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC) in the area of Suwaihan in Abu Dhabi. Brigadier Ahmed Mohammed Nehkairah, Head of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Interior and Chairman of the Juveniles Care Center Steering Committee at Abu Dhabi Police, headed the delegation and was accompanied by a number of officers, juveniles, supervisors, social workers and psychologist from the Juveniles Care Center.

Head of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Interior met with Khadem Al Mansouri, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at the International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC), and a number of officials at the Fund.

This visit reflects the keenness of the Juveniles Care Center officials to allow juveniles to relate to their national heritage and identity and to acquaint them with cultural heritage of the art of Falconry, as well as the need to maintain this historical and cultural heritage, which represents an inherent part of ancestors' lives.

Hamda Hamad Al Ameri, Education and Environmental Awareness Coordinator at IFHC, gave a brief  summary about the history of the fund, as well as its vision, goals and mission, as well as  general information and facts about the Houbara bustard. She also gave the delegation an overview of the IFHC's efforts, the different species of Asian and North African Houbara bustards that are being bred at special breeding centers affiliated to the IFHC inside and outside the country.

Mrs. Al Ameri said: "Caring for the Houbara bustard embodies the vision of late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, being one of the best falconers of his time, who was the first to notice over 30 years ago that the numbers of Houbara in the wild are declining. To this end, he enacted a number of laws and regulations to guarantee the conservation of this noble bird, which is significant to Arabian heritage and culture, secure traditional falconry and ensure conservation of Houbara populations. He also showed great attention to revive this noble heritage and highlight the distinguished national identity of the UAE."

Brigadier Nehkairah and the audience watched a documentary film that highlights late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's dedication to ensure conservation of Houbara populations.

The delegation toured the center to get acquainted with the different species of Houbara bustards. The tour included the live food section where the Houbara food resources are produced, and the breeding section using the best scientific means of artificial insemination.

At the end of the visit, both parties exchanged commemorative gifts. A number of juveniles also presented their drawings as a souvenir to the International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC).
