ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Friday, May 16th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
The Punitive and Correctional Institutions Department at Abu Dhabi Police organized its annual exhibition for inmates' traditional products and handicrafts at Dalma Mall in Mussafah. The exhibition is organized in cooperation with a number of strategic partners and will continue until early next month.
In addition to the craft products displayed, the exhibition includes several events, as well as cultural and recreational competitions. Guidance and awareness brochures prepared by strategic partners will also be distributed at the exhibition.
Colonel Ateeq Ibrahim Al Dhaheri, Deputy Director of the Punitive and Correctional Establishments at Abu Dhabi Police, said that the first-of-its-kind exhibition is held at the initiative of the Punitive and Correctional Institutions Department. "We used to take part in similar exhibitions upon the invitation of other entities. This year, we wanted the exhibition to highlight the department’s significant role in rehabilitating inmates and to partner with the private and public sectors, as well as showcase the creative level attained by the inmates in terms of design and execution," he revealed.
"Together with our partners, we seek to change community members’ perception of inmates," he added.
Bhupinder Singh, General Manager, Dalma Mall, explained that social and moral responsibility prompts them to participate in all events, in light of the significant turnout of visitors to the mall, which ensures the success of such events. This exhibition will allow visitors to get acquainted with products and handicrafts made by inmates, which prove their creativity and their ability to integrate back into society.
Aisha Salem Al Mazroui, Public Relations Manager and supervisor of the Exhibition, noted that the Mall’s administration has coordinated with the Punitive and Correctional Institutions Department in organizing the event, setting up the tents, issuing permits and organizing entry to the exhibition. "This is an impressive experience worthy of praise. It has helped increase the awareness level among community members and gave them the opportunity to see products and handicrafts manufactured by inmates. The event was also enriched with the advice and guidance provided to the public through the cultural and guidance brochures," she assured.
In the same context, Rashed Mohamed Al Rumaithi, Head of the Media and Public Relations Department at the Emirates Heritage Club, stressed the keenness to participating in such exhibitions out of their strong belief in the Club's role in the service of society. "This participation provides us with the opportunity to support the Punitive and Correctional Institutions Department and inmates in particular. It also allows us to acquaint the public with the Club's activities and products through the symbolic gifts that are distributed throughout the exhibition," he added.
Salwa Al Hosani, Chief of the Communications Section at the National Rehabilitation Center (NRC), praised the high quality of inmates' products, which constituted a pleasant surprise to all visitors. She noted that the Punitive and Correctional Institutions Department has managed to hone inmates’ skills and highlight their role in preserving the national heritage. This has encouraged civil society institutions, including the National Rehabilitation Center (NRC), to participate and to distribute guidance and awareness brochures about the dangers of addiction.
