The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, represented by Al Ain Traffic Section and in coordination with Abu Dhabi Police Air Wing Department, the Al Ain Emergency and Public Safety Department, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) and Emirates Transport in Al Ain, recently carried out a practical drill of an emergency plan in dealing with accidents involving groups of people. The drill was on the professional dealing with a virtual traffic accident of a girl’s school bus. The drill included taking all the necessary measures to control the accident and reduce all possible risks at the site, opening the road to help traffic go smoothly, as well as rescuing the injured and transferring them to hospitals.
Major Abdullah Ali Al Shamesi, from the Traffic Control Branch at Al Ain Traffic Section, indicated that carrying out the practical drill comes in line with the Directorate’s training plan in order to develop the human staff skills. It also aims to implement the highest levels of practices in dealing with accidents involving groups of people, through the emergency plan in coordination with other entities at the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters as well as all government and private institutions in Al Ain.
Al Shamesi also said that the drill was coordinated through the Security Plans Branch at the Directorate with other entities participating, which set up the scenario assuming that severe injuries resulted from a virtual traffic accident. A number of female students in a school in Al Ain sustained injuries as a result of the lack of their commitment to sit in their seats and the failure of the bus driver and supervisor to follow safety procedures.
According to the scenario, the Operations Room received a report about a virtual accident which caused a number of casualties among female students sustaining various minor and serious injuries, as a result of their failure to sit in their seats.
Moreover, during the practical drill, all entities played the required roles determined within the emergency plan, where the traffic patrols were the first to reach the accident’s site and managed to control it and drivers were redirected alternative routes. In addition, routes were opened for emergency and public safety vehicles, and the helicopter of the Air Wing Department at Abu Dhabi Police arrived at the site in order to transfer one of the students sustaining serious injuries to receive treatment at the nearest hospital. Afterwards, the traffic patrols set the plans, supervised the evacuation process from the site and opened the closed routes for the traffic.
For his part, First Lieutenant Nasser Khalifa Al Shamesi, Public Relations Branch Manager at the Al Ain Traffic Section, noted that the drill included raising awareness among the students of Vanguard Primary and High School students (the schools where the drill took place) of the risks of not sitting in their seats and their movement inside the bus. They were also told to follow the “Golden Rule” of using school buses, by moving 10 steps away of the bus when exiting and avoiding bending down near the bus without the driver’s knowledge. Furthermore, bus drivers and supervisors were educated regarding the need to pay attention and adhere to safety precautions.
