In a recent introductory workshop, Abu Dhabi Police stressed its keenness to support social efforts in caring for the deaf. The workshop was organized by the Clubs and Sports Activities Department at Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters represented by Al Ain Police Officers Club. It discussed means of communication with disabled individuals (the deaf) in the conclusion of the 39th Arab Deaf Week held under the theme “The Sports of the Deaf.” The events of the week took place in cooperation with the Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs and the UAE Deaf Association.

Colonel Hareb Khamis Al Khaili, Deputy Head of the Clubs Department, said that the Arab Deaf Week is an intensified juridical week, and is a wide media demonstration to introduce the deaf, their capabilities, and their education means. This week also introduces the rehabilitation of the deaf, their linguistic, phonetic and signal communication channels with their counterparts and other members of the society. The weeks also aims to learn about major obstacles faced by the deaf in their daily lives, and grant them their basic health, education, psychological, social, economic and rehabilitation rights.

The workshop focused on allowing the deaf and people with hearing difficulties and their related associations to play an active and positive role in the overall and sustainable social and economic development.

The event started with a recitation for verses from the Holy Quran. Following that, the UAE Deaf Association presented a comic show that shed light on the concept of the Sports of the Deaf. The show was widely admired by the public. Salima Hamad Al Tamimi, teacher specialized in the deaf issues and an accredited trainer of sign language in the UAE Deaf Association, also provided a detailed explanation that educates the society about the deaf and sign language, their capacities and means of education and rehabilitation, in addition to the most important obstacles that face the deaf in their daily life. She also touched upon the means to enhance their trust in themselves and their capabilities through the participation and enhancement of the educational and cultural role for different segments of the society.

At the end of the event, Colonel Al Khaili honored governmental parties that participated in the success of the 39th Arab Deaf Week.
