Al Ain police Directorate organized recently a drill on a hostage-taking scenario in Al Ain. The drill was executed in coordination with a number of police entities and supporting forces related to the drill.

The drill started, with a hypothetical tip-off to the operations room of the Al Ain police Directorate about a hostage-taking incident in the city of Al Ain. According to the drill’s scenario, the location has been detected and a number of security patrols were sent. The emergency and public safety departments have been informed to send a number of ambulances and rescue vehicles, establish an onsite hospital and coordinate with a number of hospitals to provide the necessary medical support. The traffic leading to the site was cut at the same time to facilitate the job of all participating teams. The operations room provided a mobile command center for onsite management of the situation, and to keep contact with the manager of the specialized center to manage the situation. When the participating forces arrived and were positioned at a safe location, the special task team surrounded the area with a cordon; the specialized team was delegated to negotiate under the command of the Chief of Al Muraba'a Police Station to persuade the “kidnappers” to set the hostages free.

Breaking in and a tactical surrounding

After affirming the location of the hostages, the commander of the drill was obliged to use force to break in and deal with kidnappers firmly to control the course of events and free the hostages. For this, a specialized security team was used, and the kidnappers were surrounded which forced them to surrender. Following that, the security team searched the building and the site of the incident using devices and police dogs to make sure the site was clear of any person or bombs. Later, the forensics team collected the evidence, based on the orders of the chief of the specialized center to investigate the incident in preparation to refer it to the specialized authorities.

Aircraft broadcasting the incident minute by minute

For his part, a specialized team from the Security Media Department and Abu Dhabi Police’s Air Wing broadcasted the events of the drill live to the operations room. This aimed to enable the participating committees to manage the incident in a more precise and controlled manner. In the meantime, the directorate’s public relations department established a media center to deal with the different media in alignment with the time of the incident, to coordinate with TV, radio and newspapers correspondents that were on site.

At the end of the drill, Brigadier General Omar Abdul Aziz Al Shamesi, Vice Chairman of the Internal Security Exercises Assessment Committee for the year 2014, in the Ministry of Interior, expressed his happiness with the precise execution of the drill. He assured that the drill went exactly as planned and achieved the goals set by the directorate to train its human resources and develop the level of police work in the field. He wished everyone more achievements and progress, and hailed the police staff and the participants. The drill was highly serious and efficient, and went well in all of its phases.
