The International Conference on Security Challenges Kicks off Tomorrow in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, March 30th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

The one day International Conference on Security Challenges, organized by the Ministry of Interior in cooperation with Reed Exhibitions, kicks off tomorrow morning in the Armed Forces Officers Club. The event is a part of the activities organized under the International Conference for Security and National Resilience (ISNR Abu Dhabi 2014) held during 1-3 April 2014 in Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC).

Renowned elite of international experts will participate in the conference to enrich this important event with productive and meaningful discussions to promote the security system at all levels. It also aims to exchange expertise, experiences and the learnt lessons between countries. In addition, it targets examining best scientific and practical methods to face international challenges and organized crime; develop and enhance international collaboration mechanisms by coordinating with all partners, elevate the security work concept from mere individual initiatives to institutional work in which all security, academic, and industrial organizations will take part; invest the event in attracting high profile individuals and security organizations making Abu Dhabi the center of the global attention in the fields of international security and resilience; and address vital issues that face the national security scene.

Brigadier Saeed Salim Al Henki, Director General of Finance & Support Services, Ministry of Interior, and Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the International Conference on Security Challenges said that this conference will discuss in the course of 3 sessions a number of axes related to security and safety. The first work session will be on “Ensuring the Readiness to Face Security Challenges” chaired by Lord John Reid the former British Secretary of State for Defense and founder and president of UCL institute for security studies. The first session will see the presentation of three work papers: the first paper will be presented by Dr. Anwar Mohammed Qarqash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and will discuss the security challenges in the light of the regional changes; the second paper will be presented by Claude Baland, Director General of the French National Police and Daniel Linskey, Director of the Boston Police Department, and will discuss the strategic visions to face security threats; and the third paper will be presented by Richard Reed, Senior Vice President at American Red Cross, and Dr. Goh Moh Heng President of BCM Institute (Singapore), and will be titled “Business Continuity Management during the Times of Crisis.”

He added that in the second work session will be chaired by Major General Vincenzo Coppola, Commander in Chief of The Division of Mobile Police Units, Republic of Italy. It will address the axe of “Regional & Modern Global Security Issues.” Three work papers will be discussed during this session: the first paper will be presented by Sandy Shean, Director of the Regional Institute for Community Policing in America and Edward Connors, President of the Institute for Justice and Law in the United States, and it will discuss the topic of event security planning and management: “Lessons Learnt from the Boston Marathon;” the second paper will be presented by John deHooge and Peter Wagner and will discuss “Major Fires – Prevention & Fighting,” the third work paper will be presented by Michelle Renee and Berretta Lang, and will  discuss the topic of “Safety Standards in a Vehicle & Driver’s Behavior.”

Brigadier Al Henki continued that Gwyn Winfield, editorial director of the British “CBRNe World” magazine will chair the third session. It will discuss the topic of the necessary emergency measures and preemptive standards in dealing with chemical, biological, nuclear, or radioactive catastrophes. It will be a roundtable session in which experts and specialists will participate to discuss the necessary emergency measures and preemptive standards in dealing with chemical, biological, nuclear, or radioactive leakage catastrophes, and view the latest expertise and practices in this field from all around the world.

He stressed that holding the International Conference on Security Challenges, comes from the keenness of the higher authorities to enforce the security march, and their continuous pursuit to follow the ongoing developments and new technologies, as well as to find the best methods and practices and discuss the latest topics of common interest, in addition to help benefiting from the available expertise, facing all challenges, and finding innovative solutions to preserve the security and safety of the UAE.

He pointed that the conference came at a time that Abu Dhabi is witnessing an unprecedented growth in both population and gross domestic product (GDP), which places the government in the face of a huge responsibility to guarantee the security and safety of the community. Reports have shown that the population growth in the emirate was 8% during the last two years, while the growth of the economy is expected to reach 5% by the end of this year.

He mentioned that the conference is attracting security services’ managers, businessmen, decision makers, and contracting companies’ managers that works in the field of security, alongside contractors in the fields of electrical and mechanical engineering. The event also attracts specialists from hotel security, hospitality, airports and ports’ security, gas and oil facilities, traffic industry, city planning and banks sectors.
