First International Road Traffic Accident Conference Concludes
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, March 12th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
The first International Road Traffic Accident Conference addressing "Causes, Challenges, and Solutions,” which was organized by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, in collaboration with Lifeline Healthcare Group, issued a number of recommendations in its final session. The conference, which took place at the Rosewood Hotel in Abu Dhabi, recommended that all educational levels should include classes on traffic safety and general health, and must encourage parents to take part in traffic education for their children and inform them about traffic laws and regulations as part of their efforts to raise their children.
Participants at the conference said that the engineering and design of roads in the UAE follows the best international standards. They stressed the importance of continuous efforts to develop procedures to check traffic safety on the UAE road network. The conference also recommended implementing the Smart Traffic Systems Center project that is being currently executed by the directorate at  the countrywide level.
At the concluding session, Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, praised the great success that was achieved at the conference, stressing the importance of the work papers, recommendations, experiences and international practices that were discussed during the event, in order to support the directorate’s traffic safety plan.
At the end of the conference, Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi honored the participants from the United States, UK, Greece, Canada, Belgium, KSA, Egypt, China, and the UAE. He praised their papers and experiences that addressed the main reasons behind traffic accidents, the suggested solutions to improve traffic safety and the international practices and inventions that use modern transportation and advanced means to reduce the severity of injuries.
The participants commended the conference, stressing the importance of organizing it regularly (every year or every two years), as it brings together experts in traffic engineering and road safety along with health professionals, in one international setting to discuss the latest means to improve traffic safety. The participants also recommended forming a scientific committee in the UAE, which includes international experts and focuses on planning and organizing the following conferences and events, in order to guarantee the implementation of the recommendations.
The conference also recommended utilizing the US traffic safety manual in order to develop a similar one for the UAE, to support the prediction and evaluation of traffic accidents, to scan the roads, and evaluate the economic feasibility of the suggested solutions.
The recommendations stressed the importance of regularly updating educational programs at all driving schools across the country, providing driving license applicants with the chance to gain the expertise necessary to deal with cars’ modern technologies and capabilities. The conference also recommended adding traffic safety studies as main indicators to evaluate road projects during the planning phase, allowing the anticipation of traffic safety-related issues at an early stage, as well as utilizing other countries’ experiences in this regard. The participants suggested integrating all data elements, including traffic accidents, roads, weather, land usage, medical reports, etc., in order to support real time decisions to increase traffic safety levels.
The recommendations suggested that there be an increase in the usage of speed controls on highways, using the latest international studies, in addition to the efficient methods to control speed using point-to-point speed cameras, instead of the traditional ones, in line with the efforts of Abu Dhabi Police.
The recommendations also covered medical treatment for victims of traffic accidents and emergency services. The participants suggested supporting research on traffic safety; building an injury response system in the UAE; providing a sufficient number of ambulances to guarantee a quick, efficient response in cases of severe injuries; building more specialized medical facilities to treat and rehabilitate accident victims and those who need to remain in hospitals for long periods of time; making it compulsory for doctors, nurses and professionals working at the emergency departments to carry valid training certificates for accident injuries.
