ADP Community Police Discusses Organizing Cafés with Partners
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Friday, February 28th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

The Community Police Department at Abu Dhabi Police discussed with partners from various departments, entities and institutions, the issue of regulating cafés in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The attendees also tackled the best rules that should be enforced on these cafés; so as to provide security and safety to community members who use the Internet at these cafés, and acquaint them with the optimal means to leverage the advantages of Internet use.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Abu Dhabi Municipality; the Economic Development Department; the Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat); the Ministry of Labor, Abu Dhabi; the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA); and the National Media Council (NMC).

Lt. Colonel Mubarak Bin Muhairom, Head of the Community Police Department noted that Internet cafés are an important and influential community development tool being a useful source of knowledge and culture. "The regulations of the law and the stipulated conditions required to be met by those cafés need to be reviewed, so as to ensure proper use of the Internet,” indicated Lt. Colonel Bin Muhairom.

He stressed the need to strengthen the awareness of the various segments of society that use internet cafés, especially adolescents and young students who play games online.

Furthermore, Lt. Colonel Bin Muhairom emphasized that the meeting aims primarily to ensure cooperation to achieve the goal of protecting the youth against Internet misuse and dangers at these cafés. "This can be achieved by examining the relevant proposals and initiatives aimed at establishing an authoritative set of rules and regulations for Internet cafés, to prevent any attempts to bend the rules,” explained Lt. Colonel Bin Muhairom.

For his part, Lieutenant Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shammari, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center, highlighted proposals to curtail controversial behaviors that are contrary to the UAE traditions and ethics via Internet cafés. Ibrahim Al Hosani, Director of Media Licensing Department at the National Media Council discussed a number of proposals that regulate internet access hours to protect children, and prevent youngsters from going to Internet cafés late at night, or during class hours.

Sultan Al Saadi, Deputy Director of the Labor Inspections Department -Abu Dhabi, called for organizing the licensing process to open such cafés, in coordination with all entities involved in this project.

At the end of the meeting, the participants issued a number of recommendations and proposals regarding the need to regulate Internet cafés, to protect Emiratis against harmful abuses.
