ADP Traffic and Patrols Directorate: New Initiatives to Mark GCC Traffic Week

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, March 1st 2014

Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate will be launching new community-based initiatives within the 30th GCC Traffic Week in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The events of the Week will take place from March 9 to 15, under the slogan "Our Goal is Your Safety”.

Such initiatives contribute to enhancing social participation and increasing traffic awareness and education. They also serve to preserve lives and properties, and enhance traffic safety across Abu Dhabi.

Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, assured that the directorate is forging ahead with implementing its strategy, which has remarkably enhanced traffic safety indicators in Abu Dhabi over the past few years. The strategy underlines the UAE leadership’s commitment to deliver its target of zero-fatality as per the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030.

"The traffic awareness strategy launched by the directorate for the years 2011-2013 has contributed to raise  traffic awareness, resulting in a decrease of traffic-related deaths," Brigadier Al Harithi added. He highlighted the efforts made by the directorate's staff members and the different partners, to achieve the directorate's vision to increase the levels of traffic safety.

Preparations for the 2014 GCC Traffic Week are currently underway across the country, to better serve the traffic safety strategy main components, namely; the human element, the vehicle and the road condition to address the repercussions of road accidents, whether in human loss or damage of properties, and provide safe and sustainable traffic environment.

The Directorate will soon be announcing its agenda with the launch of new initiatives. It will also be organizing traffic education campaigns and lectures that target school and university students, as well as government and private entities. Organizing field trips, preparing awareness publications and scheduling screening of educational movies to spread traffic awareness will also be part of the events.

Brigadier Al Harithi added: "The directorate will launch several traffic-themed exhibitions and contests. It will leverage its pages on the various social media networking sites to enhance communication with the different segments of society. It will also focus on engaging community members in spreading traffic education, being the core element to achieve a sustainable traffic safety, and an important pillar to enhancing drivers' behaviors that constitute the main cause  of traffic accidents."

For his part, Lt. Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, stated that traffic accidents have become the major issue that threatens the security and safety of communities. "Traffic safety tops the directorate's list of priorities. To this end, the directorate endeavors to launch traffic-related campaigns, programs and activities regularly, and carries out field  visits to many private and public institutions," he said.

In conclusion, Lt. Colonel Al Ameri stressed the need for government and private parties to take part in the 2014 GCC Traffic Week events, to reach the ultimate goal of reducing traffic accidents, given that traffic safety a collective social responsibility.
