Dubai International Academic City to host Fifth Annual Career Fair in 2014
The event continues to be a forum for potential employers and job seekers to engage and interact

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, February 20th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

The DIAC annual Career Fair 2014, which is organized by Dubai International Academic City (DIAC), part of TECOM Investments’ Education Cluster, will return for its fifth edition on 26 February at the DIAC Recreation Room at DIAC. The event will bring together students, graduates and leading recruiters from various industries representing both the public and private sectors. Besides guiding graduates on the most effective job search and interview techniques, the DIAC Career Fair will also offer potential employers the opportunity to get closer to the most relevant talent that matches their needs.

Bridging the gap between potential employers and job seekers and potential interns, the DIAC Career Fair is set to become a forum to a large group of talented graduates, representing a range of academic disciplines, to network with some of the UAE’s most prestigious employers.

During the Career Fair, employers will be able to interact and engage with the students and conduct on-site interviews.  A wide variety of internship and full-time recruitment opportunities will be discussed during the Career Fair. Over 45 companies have registered to date, including Standard Chartered Bank, DMG World Media, Dolphin Energy, TECOM Investments, Aujan Coca-Cola Beverages Co (ACCBC), Morgan International, Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), and Clique Communications Group. Along with DIAC, the potential employers will play a pivotal role in providing young candidates with professional guidance and advice on career opportunities and alternatives available.

Aimed at empowering students and graduates to take charge of their own future, DIAC provides youth with the ideal environment to understand their prospects in the UAE job market in terms of career orientation, key areas of employment, skill requirement, and training and development opportunities. This comes in line with the objectives of the Workforce Planning study that DIAC launched last year in collaboration with Deloitte. The study identified industry verticals where Dubai has developed a strong niche and emerged as potentially high on future employment demand. Those industries include hospitality and tourism, Islamic finance and energy. The study also identified each sector’s employability skills gap in areas like culinary arts in the hospitality and tourism industry, customer analytics and data planning in telecom, Islamic banking in finance and banking, as well as risk management in the energy and resources industry.

Dr Ayoub Kazim, Managing Director, TECOM Investments’ Education Cluster, said: "DIAC is committed to supporting the UAE’s efforts to build a sustainable, skilled and competitive workforce by offering students quality higher education that meets the needs of industries and the economy. Our various initiatives, such as the DIAC Career Fair, the Workforce Planning study, and the Qudurat Student Wave study, demonstrate our commitment to help develop the country’s ‘knowledge-based economy’ and refine future workforce planning.”

Reflecting this commitment, DIAC launched the Qudurat Student Wave study, in collaboration with Aon Hewitt, which focused on identifying key drivers of employers and aspirations of employees. The study highlighted that organisations and academia will need to make concerted efforts to forge strong and collaborative partnerships, and seek coordinated solutions in preparing students to face upcoming challenges at the workplace. One of the key findings of the study is that, when considering what should determine pay, expatriate students expected to be differentiated based on the quality of their experience on the job, whereas Emirati students expected their academic qualifications to be a key driver. The Qudurat study also identified presentation skills, teamwork, and time management as the three most prevalent training programs being provided to students in private universities.

The DIAC Career Fair, along with DIAC’s other initiatives and studies, will be very valuable to governmental institutions, private sector organisations, academic institutions, and other stakeholders looking to advance the UAE’s future talent pool in diverse capacities.

The event is organised by Student Hub, the official representative of the DIAC student body, as a part of a series of initiatives structured to support and foster students’ progression and growth. DIAC’s Student Hub have also enhanced the DIAC students experience with other valuable initiatives. Student Hub initiatives include the Week of Welcome, an annual orientation event held for new and existing students that comprises a range of exciting activities;  and the DIAC Sports Cup, the annual inter-university sports contest that offers a holistic approach to education.
