Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister, the Kingdom of Bahrain, will be hosting the 11th Gulf Heart Association and the 4th Bahrain Heart Association Congress from February 26 to 28. An elite group of international, regional, and local scientists, in addition to heart disease specialists, will participate in the conference along with 500 participants from across the globe. The event will draw from the experience of the cardiologists participating who will offer medical consultation on a few difficult cases.
The conference is one of the biggest medical and scientific gatherings. It is held annually in the Gulf region, and is taking place for the second time in Bahrain. After being held for the first time in 2006, this year’s conference will be held in the conference hall at the Gulf Hotel in Manama, Bahrain.
The conference’s organizing committee, headed by Dr. Abdul Hai Al Awadhi, announced in a press conference that the event is to be held at the Gulf Hotel, a venue that it is fully prepared to host this regional and international scientific event. Highly praising the generous patronage of his Royal Highness the Prime Minister, the committee explained that the conference will be inaugurated in Bahrain with the participation of an elite international group of specialists from the medical field.
Dr. Abdul Hai Al Awadhi, Head of the Organizing Committee, and the former Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, stressed that this conference features the participation of two societies that are deeply-rooted in the field of cardiology, namely the European Society of Cardiology, and the American College of Cardiology. He also pointed out that this is the first time that the conference will be certified by the European Board for Accreditation in Cardiology (EBAC). Participating doctors, nurses, and other medical staff members participating will receive 18 training hours that are certified by the European Board. For the first time, the conference will witness the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Gulf Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Al Awadhi also explained that the conference targets cardiologists and heart surgeons. Taking place over the course of three days, the conference will include scientific sessions, workshops, and the presentation of scientific papers about heart disease prevention and treatment. The most important research and studies that were conducted in the medical field in the Gulf region will be presented at the conference. Dr. Al Awadhi explained that 45 speakers from the US, UK, Egypt, and the Gulf region will discuss 39 topics, including heart disease and its treatment. This conference will be the first time where participating doctors, nurses, and other staff members will receive 18 hours of training certified by the European Board.
Dr. Anwer Jamsheer, Consultant Cardiologist at the Salmaniya Medical Complex, asserted that the conference is an open opportunity to exchange medical information and expertise. The conference is important because of its educational benefits for doctors in Bahrain and in the Gulf, and because it informs them about the important medical developments made in diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Jamsheer indicated that according to local statistics, cardiologic diseases are the primary cause of deaths in Bahrain, while cancer-related deaths come in second. He also noted that due to the participation of a group of international experts and professors that treat heart diseases, the conference will be an important starting point for the kingdom’s treatment of heart disease.
Dr. Anwer Jamsheer explained that due to the high occurrence rates of heart disease in recent years, the World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized heart disease among epidemic diseases occurring in the Gulf region. He stressed the importance of adopting the European countries’ methods to limit such cases. The European experiment was mainly based on promoting prevention methods through changing life behaviors and habits. Dr. Jamsheer stressed the importance of early detection tests to detect some diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. He also said that the conference is unique because it presents the most recent scientific discoveries made regarding heart disease prevention, in addition to showcasing modern developments of diagnostic tools; doctors, nurses, technical professionals, and those interested in the medical field will be introduced to the most recent methods of heart disease treatment and surgery. Dr. Jamsheer highlighted that the coordination committee is keen on presenting recent scientific research, providing a suitable scientific environment for the exchange of expertise by introducing research that is conducted internationally as well as regionally, and benefiting from the participation of international doctors. Dr. Anwer Jamsheer also said that the conference aims to provide different workshops that study the modern basics of diagnosis. This grand scientific assembly is an opportunity for junior doctors to contact international doctors directly and benefit from their experiences. The conference will work on promoting and fostering a heart disease prevention culture and developing this culture in order to keep up with western cultures. This culture can only be promoted by encouraging all society segments, starting with school children, teenagers, adults and the elderly, to adopt preventive methods such as participating in sports, eating healthy foods, abstaining from smoking, and conducting early detection tests that measure blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol.
For his part, Dr. Adel Khalifa, Consultant Cardiologist at the Bahrain Defense Force Hospital, explained that the conference will include 8 scientific sessions in addition to many lectures; 19 lectures are assigned to take place on the first day, while 38 lectures are assigned to take place on the second and third days.
