The
Ministry of Interior briefed a United Nations delegation on its
strategy and experience in promoting and protecting human rights, as
well as its efforts in the criminal justice process. The UN delegation
headed by Gabriela Knaul, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the
independence of judges and lawyers, is currently on a one-week official
visit to the UAE to assess the functioning of the judicial system in the
country.
Brigadier Ahmed Mohammed Nehkairah, Head of the Human
Rights Department at the Ministry of Interior, recently met the
delegation at the Etihad Hall at the Ministry. Brigadier Nehkairah
emphasized the ministry’s commitment to promoting the law respect
culture, the excellence and competitiveness standards in the area of
forensic laboratories around the world, in addition to benchmarking in
the fields of crime scene investigation and forensic evidence, as well
as social support. Moreover, he highlighted the results achieved by the
ministry in this area, the results of opinion polls for the year 2013,
and the general sense of satisfaction towards the ministry’s services,
functions and duties.
The two parties exchanged views on various
issues related to human rights, applicable laws in the state, which
guarantee the protection of rights, the criminal justice system in the
Ministry of Interior, and the methods of implementing it in
collaboration and coordination with the judicial authorities.
Brigadier
Dr. Abdullah Ali bin Sahoo, Director General of Residency and
Foreigners Affairs in Sharjah, attended the meeting along with
representatives from various departments of the Ministry of Interior.
Also
participating in the meeting were representatives from the Human
Rights Department at the Ministry of Interior, the Al Mafraq Juvenile
Welfare Center at Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, the Law Respect Culture Bureau
at the Ministry of Interior, the Forensic Evidence Department at the
Directorate General of Security and Ports Affairs of Abu Dhabi Police,
the Crime Scene Department at Abu Dhabi Police, the Abu Dhabi Community
Police Department, and the Department of Social Support at the Abu Dhabi
Police GHQ.
