Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, January 15th 2014
The Ministry of Interior has installed a defibrillator in the main building of the Ajman Municipality and Planning Department located in Al Bustan area. This step was taken upon the instructions of the police leadership, on the need to install defibrillators in public places across the UAE.
For this end, the Emergency and Public Safety Department at Abu Dhabi Police organized a specialized workshop to train the department’s staff members on how to operate the resuscitation device in case of emergencies.
Trainers Mohamed Khaled Talibi and Abdul Hamid Farhat conducted the training workshop, where they spoke about the basic principles and procedures of first aid and CPR. They also provided a detailed explanation about the defibrillator, and how to use it on adults and children.
They noted that the defibrillator is used when there are symptoms of circulatory failure (ischemia) in a person with suspected heart failure. The symptoms include fainting, irregular breathing, weak or absent pulse, or absence of circulatory activity. They said that the device is easy and safe to use, as it does not provide an electric shock until it analyses pulse and heart signals to detect ventricular fibrillation, which would require an electric shock.
Marwan Bin Mohamed Al Nuaimi, Head of Customers Policies Section at the Ajman Municipality, praised the Ministry of Interior’s initiative. "Such initiatives will help save people’s lives, and are a true reflection of our leadership’s keenness to ensure citizens’ and residents’ safety,” he added. He stressed the importance of installing these heart defibrillators in public places across the country and the importance of training people on how to operate the life-saving device to help save those in need.
The device will also be installed at the Al Manara Center in Ras al-Khaimah, the Fujairah City Centre, and the Sahara Center in Sharjah.
The United Arab Emirates is one of the first countries in the region to popularize the use of this important device, after its efficiency has been proved to reduce sudden cardiac deaths in the countries where it is in use. Worldwide, mortality rates due to sudden cardiac arrest account for more than 90%. The use of this device has decreased this to less than 30%.
