The Ministry of Interior, represented by the Traffic Coordination Directorate General, has launched the year’s first unified traffic awareness campaign. The campaign is in line with the initiative that aims to develop and implement traffic awareness programs in 2014. The nation-wide initiative, which was launched under the slogan "Beware of Motorbike Dangers” at the beginning of the year, will last for three months. It aims to urge all motorbike drivers, as well as all segments of society, particularly young people and families, to abide by traffic laws and avoid accidents.
Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Zaabi, Director General of the Traffic Coordination Directorate General at the Ministry of Interior, stressed that the campaign falls in line with the ministry’s strategy originating from the Federal Government's strategy. It is in pursuance of the directives established by the police leadership, to achieve the highest levels of traffic safety for all. "This traffic campaign, which falls within the framework of the Traffic Sector’s strategic plan for 2014 – 2016, is designed to develop and implement the Ministry of Interior’s traffic awareness programs. It will include 24 traffic campaigns this year, 4 of which are integrated campaigns at the state level and 20 other secondary campaigns consistent with the traffic issues pertaining to each department. In addition, to the other campaigns that will be organized by the traffic departments to promote road safety and reduce traffic accidents,” said Brigadier Al Zaabi.
Brigadier Al Zaabi added: "According to traffic statistics, 210 motorbike accidents occurred in 2013, causing 16 deaths and 236 severe, moderate or minor injuries. These accidents were caused as a result of people’s failure to adhere to traffic laws and police instructions.
Brigadier Al Zaabi highlighted the importance of promoting traffic awareness among bikers and helping them avoid the risks of the unsafe usage of motorbikes. "Motorbikes must meet the security and safety requirements. Bikers must wear protective helmets while driving and comply with traffic laws and regulations,” added Brigadier Al Zaabi. Furthermore, he warned parents against allowing their children to ride bikes in unauthorized places, especially on holidays; stressing the importance of using safety gear.
On the same note, Brigadier Al Zaabi reiterated the fact that the Traffic Coordination Directorate General at the Ministry of Interior is implementing this campaign in cooperation with the traffic and licensing departments across the country, as well as with other bodies concerned with traffic safety in the public and private sectors. "These bodies support these initiatives to create safe environments and roads that are free of accidents,” explained Al Zaabi. He also emphasized the need of supporting media efforts, and highlighting the role of the Ministry of Interior and other institutions concerned with the campaign.
