The Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police has asked drivers to take precautions and abide by traffic rules during the heavy rainfall that has been occurring in the UAE recently. He said that this will help people avoid accidents that occur as a result of sudden braking and slipping.
Lt. Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of Public Relations Section in the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, has asked bus drivers, specifically workers’ bus drivers, to decrease their speed and leave enough space between vehicles.
"Guarantying the safety of students and workers is more important than resuming the ride,” Al Ameri said, advising bus drivers to stop driving if the weather conditions change and park on the far right side of the roads, in addition to turning their caution lights on.
"Drivers ought to make sure their vehicles are well equipped to ensure their proper functioning during changing weather conditions. They should conduct constant maintenance of their vehicles, and test the safety of brakes, tires, windscreen wipers, and heating and cooling equipment.” He stressed the importance of leaving enough space between vehicles and said that drivers should avoid sudden braking in order to prevent vehicles from skidding.
He also stressed the importance of caution in rainy conditions, and said that drivers should decrease their vehicles’ speed and avoid sudden braking. "It is important that drivers brake gradually to prevent the car from skidding, and use windscreen wipers and car lights to help see the road,” Al Ameri said, noting that braking efficiency decreases on wet surfaces.
"If traffic accidents occur due to rain, drivers should call the Central Operation Room on 999 and describe the accident scene accurately. They should remove the vehicle off the road in the event of a minor accident or abstain from moving the vehicle and launch the 4 warning lights in the event of major accidents, and abstain from moving the wounded unless they are medical professionals,” he advised.
He finally asked drivers to refrain from stopping their vehicles at accident sites, as this could prevent the Traffic and Patrols Directorate’s vehicles from reaching the location and cause additional accidents. Al Ameri then criticized some negative activities, including crowding at accident sites and taking pictures of the accidents. He also spoke about the risks of moving wounded victims without any medical knowledge, which could complicate the injury.
