Houbara Fund Launches a Cultural and Awareness Campaign on Social Media to Mark the World Migratory Bird Day
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates-Thursday, May 11th 2017 [ ME NewsWire ] The International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC) has celebrated the occasion of World Migratory Bird Day, which aims at raising awareness for conserving migratory birds and their environment across the globe. The World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated on May 10th, every year. The Fund celebrates this annual occasion as being the largest international programme to conserve the Houbara bustards which is aligned with the Abu Dhabi vision for environmental sustainability in the field of protecting wildlife and biodiversity. It also proves the great importance of the Houbara bustard for the culture and heritage of the United Arab Emirates and its people. This year, the IFHC launched a cultural and awareness campaign through its website www.houbarafund.org and through its social media accounts @Houbarafund, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of migratory birds-one of the most important elements and indicators of biodiversity. Ali Mubarak Al-Shamsi, acting Head of Communications and Public Relations at IFHC said: “We are honored to celebrate this occasion annually and we are committed to the strategic vision adopted by the Fund to release captive-bred Houbara bustards in their countries, ranging from Central Asia to the Arabian Peninsula, which provides a better and promising future for migratory birds.” Al-Shamsi noted that the Fund is considered as one of the most comprehensive international programmes in the field of conserving this migratory bird and that the Fund works tirelessly to conserve the Houbara and to increase their population to sustain this bird for the future generations. “This is in line with achieving the vision of the UAE government which matches with the international vision of protecting birds, the environment and wild life,” said Al Shamsi. He added: “To celebrate this occasion, the Fund has launched a short film in Arabic and English languages on its YouTube channel to educate the public about the Houbara bustards, how they migrate and the route of their migration. The move aims at increasing awareness about the Houbara and working together for a safer future for migratory birds.” The International Fund for Houbara Conservation works on increasing and conserving two types of Houbara bustards including the Asian and the North African Houbara in their centres in the UAE, Morocco and Kazakhstan. The Asian Houbara is considered a migratory bird unlike the North African Houbara. The Asian Houbara can migrate distances that exceed 4,000 km per year. The Fund registered the longest distance for a female Houbara that migrated for 4,500 km from Gobi desert in China to Pakistan. Its speed during migration reaches (from 40 to 70) km/hour and they fly at the height of 400 meters above the ground. The researchers from the International Fund for Houbara Conservation have studied the migration of this bird since 1991 through satellite tracking devices. The results of the studies present very important information and data about the environment and habitat of this bird enabling the Fund to develop a pioneering scientific programme for conservation through captive breeding and release of the Houbara bustard into the wild.
