| The four-day event assesses biodiversity conservation in the region

Under the generous patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the Sharjah International Conservation Forum for Arabia’s Biodiversity focuses on the conservation of biodiversity in the region.
Held at the Breeding Centre for Endangered Arabian Wildlife in Sharjah, the Forum facilitates the exchange of theoretical and practical experiences across a diverse range of themes including discussions on the dangers faced by species of vulture and the management of protected areas in the region as well as developing a Regional Red List assessment of the trees of the Arabian Peninsula and hosting a series of veterinary workshops focused on endoparasite management in ruminants.
Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah, said: “The Emirate of Sharjah continues to be at the forefront of environmental conservation; exerting all possible efforts to enable the review of environmental issues, as well as the consultation, discussion and exchange of ideas and information. The International Conservation Forum for Arabia’s Biodiversity, through the facilitation of discussion and the exchange of knowledge, aims to raise awareness and knowledge of biodiversity issues and find solutions that facilitate international efforts in this domain.”
Organised by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), the four-day forum attracts a large number of international wildlife conservation experts, speakers and researchers from around the world who work collaboratively to assess biodiversity in the Arabian Peninsula.
The Forum provides an important platform for discussion and allows for the implementation of plans to save endangered species native to the region such as vultures. According to the EPAA, Sharjah hopes to boost its role in conserving vultures, by implementing breeding of the bird species in the nation.
“Vultures are among the most important species of migratory birds. Loss of these species can have serious consequences for ecosystems and human populations alike. As such it is important to invest in vulture conservation to keep the environment clean and safe for humans,” added Her Highness.
In addition, the Forum facilitates the assessment of regional plants and aloes, as well as an assessment of protected areas in the region.
Over the course of the Forum, the Protected Areas Theme works to reevaluate the protected areas in the region by drawing from Management Effectiveness Tracking Tools (METT) assessments carried out for a selected number of protected areas in 2008, providing the most up-to-date and comprehensive list of protected areas for the Peninsula.
The UAE has made considerable advancements in terms of protected areas and was ranked first in 2014 and 2016 in the Marine Habitat Protection section of Yale University’s Environmental Performance Index (EPI).
