MoI Develops Qannas, a Cartoon Character that uses the Latest Technology to Move

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, September 21st 2014 [ME NewsWire]

The Ministry of Interior(MoI), represented by the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, has developed the cartoon character, Qannas. Under the supervision of specialized staff, the cartoon character can be moved by using the latest creative technological and technical means. These specialized staff provide advice and guidance through the cartoon clips on satellite TV channels and social media sites. These clips will surprise the audience with their content and realistic language communication that is mixed with the values, heritage and traditions of the UAE community. According to Lieutenant Colonel Saeed Al Khajah, Deputy Director of Security Media Department, the objective of Qannas is to spread knowledge and awareness of security, community, and culture among the police community.

Lieutenant Al Khajah explained that the Qannas will also recall the messages published by the MoI and Abu Dhabi Police, provide awareness tips, and will participate in special police and public events in the country and for the global police. He noted that the interest in developing the character of Qannas came in harmony with the identity of the community and is in line with the technological developments and the revolution of utilizing 3D movement with the expertise of a specialist team.

Lt. Colonel Al Khajah added that Qannas will continue his usual communication with his audience and fans in the local dialect and in an innovative manner. In order to facilitate access to the public, the messages have been translated into various languages. Qannas is a local character that is designed and moved by specialized research. He said, “Cartoon characters have become a lovely feature in our community, whether on TV or on social media. They attract thousands of fans and followers, and children and families interact with its noble and meaningful message. In these ways, the character of Qannas will be used to communicate the initiatives of security media to families and children, with the objective to spread knowledge and awareness of security, community, and police culture.”

Since its inception last January, Qannas, who has the air of a wise man, communicates with followers and consolidates awareness messages on Twitter @Abudhabipolice and  Instagram @MOIUAE through the principles of high community values. The character has succeeded in attracting large numbers of followers thanks to his wisdom; spirit of love for work, learning, and development; and through open discussion and dialogue by presenting purposeful topics relevant to the interest of the community within the framework of police and security awareness.

The character was invented by the Security Media Department with the objective of increasing public interaction with the police in community and security awareness matters, and will help achieve more positive results in the community.

Lt. Colonel Al Khajah said, “Qannas is 40 years-old. He is educated, loves to read, and likes to help others. You can also describe him as in touch with modern technologies, and committed to the customs, traditions, and the principles of law respect. The character is inspired by the Emirati environment; he aims to enhance awareness in the police, community and security fields in relation to the everyday life and social behaviors of our community within the context of continuous awareness initiatives that suit the different segments of the public.”
