MoI Award for Best Societal Screenplay Launched at the Dubai Film Festival
The Award worth $100,000 to be granted as of next year

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, December 14th 2013

As the curtain went down on Saturday on the 10th edition of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior announced  a new award for next year’s edition. The Ministry of Interior’s Award for the Best Societal Screenplay, with a prize worth $ 100,000, shall be granted as of next year. Child protection will be the theme of the inaugural award, which will cover the 14 dimensions of child protection.

The announcement was made during a press conference at the Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai, in the presence of Lieutenant Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shammari, Director of the Child Protection Center at the Ministry of Interior, and Masoud Amralla Al Ali, Artistic Director of the Dubai International Film Festival.

Lieutenant Colonel Faisal Al Shammari indicated that the Award was established upon the directives of the police leadership with respect to launching awareness-raising programs and initiatives.  "The police leadership also strives to create a societal film culture to enhance security culture locally and internationally, in pursuance of the Ministry of Interior’s vision,” added Al Shammari. Furthermore, Lt. Colonel Al Shammari expressed his heartfelt thanks to the management and organizers of the Festival, and the Security Media Department for their valuable contributions in introducing the award.

Lt. Colonel Al Shammari noted that the Best Societal Screenplay Award will be introduced as part of next year’s Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF).  "The award will recognize the best screenplay that deals with all topics related to child protection and safety, with the aim of calling attention to the situation of abused or neglected children,” added Al Shammari.

The Director of the Child Protection Center noted that the Award serves as recognition to filmmakers’ contribution. "It reflects the valuable role played by the film industry and filmmakers, who can efficiently communicate with different society segments,” pointed out Al Shammari. Moreover, he indicated that the film industry has left its mark in the efforts geared towards enhancing social awareness and delivering awareness messages to all community members.

Al Shammari also explained that launching the Award with child protection as the main theme for the award’s inaugural edition coincide with the government’s efforts and initiatives to approve the Child Rights Law, which is currently being discussed at the Federal National Council.

For his part, Masoud Amralla Al Ali emphasized that the Award reflects a responsible farsightedness and great attention by the Ministry of Interior, represented by Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. He praised the ministry’s keenness to harness the film industry, referred to as the "Seventh Art”, to advocate for various societal issues, particularly child protection, in the first award’s inaugural edition.

Adding further, Al Ali stated: "We are honored to see this prestigious award launched during the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF). We are also pleased to cooperate with the Security Media Department, and to take part in ensuring security and safety of the community.”
