The 23rd Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Annual Meeting Concludes

The participants in the 23rd Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Annual Meeting recommended relying on ultrasounds as a modern diagnostic tool for the majority of bone and joint diseases and sport injuries.

The recommendation was during the conclusion of the meeting that the international Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Society organized at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr Hotel in Abu Dhabi from the 13th to 16th of November. The Abu Dhabi Police was the platinum sponsor of the event and was represented by the Medical Services Administration in Abu Dhabi.

The participants urged the importance of holding such conferences to train doctors and staff with the aim of reaching an advanced level of the medical services methods presented.

The experts and speakers praised the notable advanced level that the UAE is witnessing in the medical and medical care fields. They also admired the platinum sponsorship of the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, represented by the Medical Services Administration. The magnificence of the sponsorship was clear in the generous hospitality and the professionalism in organizing and preparing the meeting that was exemplified by Dr. Ayman Mohammed Fahim. Dr. Fahim is the local supervisor and is MUSoc-certified for the use of ultrasound in diagnosing bone and joint diseases and injuries.

On Saturday, the meeting addressed some of the work papers the expert participants presented. Dr. Philip Baitronez from Belgium presented a work paper on the nerves around the shoulder joint and the importance of diagnosing joint diseases.   

Professor Michael Di Pietro and Dr. Howard Teodor from the US presented a joint work paper on diagnosing shoulder joint diseases in children. Dr. Marnix van Holsbeeck, M.D., Henry Ford Hospital, USA, featured a work paper tackling the importance of shoulder joint diagnostics especially after surgical interventions and treatment through surgical endoscopy.

Dr. Emilio Velinashetty from Italy presented a work paper on rheumatic diseases that might affect the shoulder joint. Dr. William Shiels from the US spoke on how ultrasound tests can be used to remove unidentified objects and draw samples, in addition to the use of local injections in shoulder joint diseases.

Dr. Carlo Martinoli from Italy explained in a practical live example how nerve diseases around the shoulder joint can be diagnosed.

The doctors and medical staff were then divided into groups to participate in the organized applied workshops. The experts and speakers trained the doctors during these workshops on obtaining the experience of diagnosing with ultrasounds.

Dr. Keal from South Korea tackled the diseases affecting the shoulder and the ribcage areas. Dr. Dohi Lee from the US delivered a work paper on how to diagnose the shoulder joint capsule and tendon injuries. Belgian Dr. Philip Baitronez delivered a presentation on calcifications and the effect on the shoulder joint area and how to diagnose and treat them.

Concluding, Dr. Anthony Bovard from the Detroit Medical Center in the USA gave a practical explanation on the applied methods that were presented in previous work papers.

The international experts held ten different workshops for three hours on practical training and on training the doctors and staff to gain the necessary experience.
