Diabetes Awareness Campaign at Abu Dhabi Police
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, November 16th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

Coinciding with the globally-celebrated World Diabetes Day, the Medical Services Department of Abu Dhabi Police organized an educational campaign to raise community awareness as to the seriousness of diabetes and its risk factors. The campaign was held at Al Bateen Council in Abu Dhabi, with the participation of a significant number of citizens and residents.

Major Dr. Tarek Abdullah Al Junaibi, Health Education Branch Manager at the Medical Services Department and Supervisor of the Campaign, said that the diabetes prevention campaign embodies the Abu Dhabi Police’s community service strategy, particularly with respect to the medical and health aspects, in addition to spreading prevention awareness among community members with a view to prevent and reduce diabetes.

Al Junaibi indicated that the campaign aims at increasing society members’ awareness about the need to lead a healthy lifestyle to prevent diabetes and blood pressure diseases, rapidly becoming the most common diseases that impact the lives of both individuals and communities.

He added that the campaign coincides with the World Diabetes Day marked every year on November 14 in the UAE and worldwide. "The campaign included medical tests to measure blood sugar levels, blood pressure, cumulative analysis of blood sugar, as well as BMI tests to measure height and weight to determine overweight and obesity,” Al Junaibi continued. Additionally, Dr. Ahmad Fathi, a diseases specialist at the Medical Services Department, offered medical consultations; questions and queries of participants in the campaign were answered. Educational brochures and publications were distributed to community members.

The Medical Services Section at the Al Ain Police Directorate also organized an awareness-raising lecture about diabetes risks.

Major Ayman Jumeian Suleiman, Chief of the Medical Services Section in Al Ain, stressed the importance of improving and spreading the medical knowledge and diabetes prevention among police staff members.

Dr. Angham Ali Aman, Health Education Unit officer, said that the lecture aims at achieving the goals of the health education methodology, with a view to increase the health awareness level among police members regarding chronic and dangerous diseases.

Dr. Maha Mahmoud, a General Medical Practitioner in the Section, had indicated in her lecture the risks of having diabetes and its means of prevention, pointing out that the major increase in the disease rates all over the world is due to the life of luxury and the economic development in the most affected countries. She called upon everyone to exercise daily, refrain from eating fast foods high in saturated fats, and develop healthy eating habits.
