The Abu Dhabi Police and the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority defined the manufacturing specifications of mail and food boxes installed on motorbikes used for making deliveries. The specifications aim to ensure the safety of drivers and others while maintaining the balance and food safety during transportation.
Major Saif Al Zaabi, Vehicles Licensing Branch Manager at Abu Dhabi Police, said that the specifications are an integral part of issuing or renewing the ownership of motorbikes used for transporting food and mail. He pointed out that the new specifications are valid starting next month.
He added that the dimensions of the box should not exceed 40×40×40 cm. He also stressed that the box must be fixed on the bike’s seat or back basket and that the cover must be unlockable from the front and well-fixed from the rear with a joint. The specifications also require that the outer surface of the box should be made of AP Plastic with no sharp edges.
The specifications also require the box to contain inner lighting from the lateral and rear sides and that the identifying information should be written on the sides, well lit, and readable from 20 meters distance. The boxes must also have a red and white "X” phosphoric sign on all sides.
Major Saif Al Zaabi urged motorbike drivers who use their bike for deliveries to abide by safe traffic and driving laws to avoid accidents. He also asked them not to over-load it, take all safety measures, and not to drive fast.
All delivery motorbikes must have ownership certificates to get authorization certificates prior to installing the boxes. The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority will issue the certificates; after the driver gets the certificate, he must contact the Vehicles Licensing Branch to complete the authorization procedures.
Muhammad Jalal Al Raisi, Manager of Communication and Community Service at Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, asserted that the authority is committed to developing cohesive and decisive control mechanisms and procedures for food safety for the public. The procedures cover all the food chains in which transport and delivery is a main role.
He added that the authority is working on applying the international food safety procedures and standards, which are based on control systems and procedures, and health issues. Therefore, the authority endeavored to specify the standards for food delivery transportation boxes.
He also pointed out that health specifications require the internal part of the motorbikes’ boxes to be made of non-infectious and smell-proof materials. The boxes should also be made of corrosive-resistant, non-absorbent materials that can be cleaned continuously with antiseptics.
The boxes must also be able to maintain a suitable temperature for the food material in a way that prevents contamination. Al Raisi stressed the fact the authority will carry out regular inspections to assure adherence to these specifications while transporting food in boxes of motorbikes. All the procedures aim to maintain a safe and secure food environment in the community.
